My first tractor...Yanmar YM240

Hello all, I'm new to the forums and new to the world of tractors. I just completed my first purchase, a Yanmar YM240 that I found locally on Craigslist. The prior owner was an older farmer a few towns over, who used it mainly for mowing his 2 acre lawn at the house. Other than that, he just tinkered with it in the garage. I think that it's in pretty good shape, very clean, and you can tell he took care of his equipment. He was good enough to offer to deliver it to my cabin about an hour away, so that was the icing on the cake and made it too good of a deal to pass up.

I bought this with the following goals in mind: mowing my 1.5 acre lawn around the cabin, clearing out approx 2 acres of overgrown pasture, and finally putting in some food plots for next year's deer season. It came with a finish mower, so now I'm in the market for a roto tiller and maybe a brush mower (have a DR field and brush mower, so I can alternatively do some brush clearing by hand).

I'm looking forward to learning as much as possible thanks to the other good folks on here, and I'd like to ask two questions off the bat. Please pardon my ignorance, if applicable!

1) The throttle does not stay where set for more than a second or two, having the tendency to move downwards towards off. From reading around, I think this is a pretty common thing, but couldn't find a discussion of the problem for this particular tractor. Any tips on how to modify the linkage to get it to stick in place?

2) I wanted to get it good and greased, but I have no idea what type of grease the prior owner used. Should I be concerned about mixing greases in any place in particular? Is there a safe bet on what to use, or is it best to find out if possible? (I plan on calling and asking the prior owner, but just in case he doesn't know either).

There are several owners on here, and lots of discussion recently.

That is immaculately clean, the guy took care of it. You'll love it.

For the throttle holding position, there's a washer between the movable and fixed parts, where the throttle lever is attached to the firewall. I made a replacement washer for mine but I don't remember what I used, maybe fabric-backed sheet rubber from an old boot. Preferred, buy the right washer from Hoyetractor.com. They have anything you might ever want for this.

Welcome to the forum. :welcome: Nice looking tractor. There is also a double nut on the end of the throttle lever. Could be a little tightening could solve your loose throttle. See item 12 on this 2000 drawing. Throttle works just backwards from yours but friction on it is the same. Yanmar Tractor Parts: THROTTLE

When I got my machine the throttle lever was so loose it would rattle down due to vibration and stall the tractor. As Winston pointed out there is a double nut on the pivot point of that lever. I tightened that and it will now stay where I put it. Maybe your problem is as simple as that?

When I got my machine the throttle lever was so loose it would rattle down due to vibration and stall the tractor. As Winston pointed out there is a double nut on the pivot point of that lever. Look to the inside of that mounting flange where the throttle lever pivots (in your final two pictures). I tightened that and it will now stay where I put it. Maybe your problem is as simple as that?

No doubt you don't have the correct Nylon washer. Looks to be a round Wire brush? Also be careful tightening it up. It also looks as though the handle may have already been broken from over tightening it. Trust me it doesn't take much to break it. I broke off the Threads of mine.:shocked: really easily!! I was able to weld them back and here's a pic. of what the Nylon washer fits like. Fredricks Outdoors mailed me the correct one in a Reg. Env..

I've noticed the great community support on this site (and others). I sure am glad that I decided to go for it and get this tractor!

I suspected it might be something this simple, just didn't have much time to play around with it when I accepted delivery at my property. Will check this first the next time I head out there. And thanks for the suggestion to check parts on the YM2000 page on hoyetractor.com, I hadn't thought of that, and was wondering where the throttle parts were for my YM240.

I'm going to be tempted to spend some extra time keeping it looking clean, althought I have plans to put it through its paces!
