Larro could you explain the rocket mass heater. I think I know what one looks like but how does it work for the green house. What I'm thinking of is more of a cook stove style.

Good evening all. 69F this morning made it to 94F cloudy this morning, calm wind, cleared off this afternoon and more of a breeze. Temps will be falling for the next few days and rain chance next week. Just puttered today.

Larro could you explain the rocket mass heater. I think I know what one looks like but how does it work for the green house. What I'm thinking of is more of a cook stove style.

It is a new age twist on a fire method that folks who lived on the plains {all over the world} have been using for thousands of years. Nomads couldn't carry a fireplace with them, and when they were crossing hostile land, having their fire or smoke seen might mean they got killed. So they dug two holes in the ground with a connecting tunnel. You start your fire in one side, then blow on it, and the fire goes out the other hole, hiding the flame and putting out almost no smoke. The rocket stove uses this same thing, with the fire burning sideways. There is a heat riser taking the exhaust up, then it comes back down inside a drum creating a huge draft. This is what makes it so efficient. The mass part of it comes from running your stovepipe {from the bottom of the drum} along the ground or floor, then covering it with a clay, sand and straw mixture called cob. The dried cob absorbs the heat and releases it slowly. Often there is no smoke at all because the wood burns up completely. A double handful of ash is about what you get per month.

For my greenhouse I'm going to run the stovepipe under the center raised bed. I'm going to make a really small one for the camp I'm planning at the pond. Hopefully the practice will help when I build the one in the greenhouse.

Here is a You Tube video that is pretty good at explaining it. But there are hundreds of them on You Tube.

66 right now...dropping to 60 as today's "high". I don't think we got the amount of rain predicted (2.5-2.7 inches) which is probably a good thing.

Need to get coffee started brewing. 50° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 63° with sun and a cool north breeze. Got .4" of rain yesterday. Lots of running around today. Haircut and other chores.
Good Morning All.

67F now much needed rain has fallen since last evening and more rain heavy at times until mid afternoon.
After low pressure leaves the temps going to drop, maybe low 60's for high.

Long range forecast doesn't look all that good for the Deerfield Fair this weekend. :(

Enjoy the day all.

73 going up to low 80's in rain, again, this afternoon. Worse, we have almost constant rain for the next few days, and then a tropical storm/hurricane will dump more on the edge of the East Coast. I sure wish I had my orchard ditches in...hope I'm not too late. This kind of precip isn't supposed to start for months...

72 when I left this AM. Upper 70's today. Feels - tropical.

Last night the rain finally came, and came. Sheesh. Probably a good 2 inches in a few hours. Will have to make an assessment later this afternoon when I can see in the daylight.

It had been all around us for days, so I guess it is catch-up time.

Have a great day all. Please be safe.

Broken clouds this morning but damage is done ground completely soaked and showers return later today.

There is a strong possibility that by Sunday lots of us here in Virginia and North Carolina will see 4 or 5 inches of additional rain maybe three times that. Those effected please read weather carefully this could be devastating. Please note could be and in following weather for 20 years plus never seen this type of set up before. Good news is hurricane or TS at least by one model will not effect us but low in Georgia will
Two weeks ago we needed rain now not so much

Pond overflowed yesterday newly seeded grass by building washed out huge ruts so when it dries out I'll be busy. Good Morning

73 and like riptides says...tropical feeling outside. Should get to 80 and more rain. Had a monsoon yesterday...more expected through Sunday.

Drew, sounds like you'll need a canal rather than a ditch with all that's forecasted. Hope it comes in spells that allows it to drain between downpours.

RNG - still dishwasher shopping...we read a lot of mixed reviews, too. Gonna be a tough choice.
