One of the problems with bigger tires up front is you can't see the loader. It also means you have to widen the front axle so the tires can turn and not hit the frame. You get more traction with a bigger tire, but for little tractors with small HP, there is no advantage or need to put bigger tires up front

If you look at history books of tractors you will see how tractors have evolved in a most unfortunate way. The rear wheels provided drive and the fronts (small) were just for steering. They were never meant for 4wd or a loader for that matter.

Large equal size tires are the best way to go. But a drive train must be up to the task and so for this reason you see more and more dinky tire type compacts and subs. Some really bordering on pathetic, if you ask me. You are getting what you paid for.

Our Kubota M135GX has 14.9 x 24 front and 18.4 x 38 rear while our 20 HP smaller New Holland TA115A has 14.9 x 26 front and 18.4 x 34 rear. On the Kubota we actually overinflated the fronts for loader work. They really squish out. Unfortunately there is no ability to upsize due to front - rear gear ratios. Our L5740 needed a replacement front at the third flat. Was able to jump from Kubota's 6 ply front to a heavy duty 10 ply. It's such a common skid steer tire there are lots of options available but I wish it too had larger fronts for our utility farmyard work.

What?

Aside from the challenge of trying to maintain a full steering angle, mentioned by bcp, there is also a stability trade-off. Since the front axle, on most 4wd tractors, fits under the front frame & engine, it stands to reason that increasing the front wheel diameter (on SCUTs & CUTs) would require raising the front frame & engine height ... and the COG.

I wouldn't necessarily care if the tire was a lot taller, just needs to be a lot wider on my B26. Those little 6" wide tires sink up too much in soft soil with a loader full of dirt.

Rolling radius also needs to be calculated when adjusting tire diameter (on mfwd machines). The smaller the rear, the fewer the choices there can be and still keep the tractor relatively level.

Go back to the photo in the first post and it does look like newer models of larger tractors do seem to be coming out with larger diameter front tires and are engineered for them.

Here's a Kubota to go with the photo of the Case in the first post.

Is that possible?!?!

*grin * it would take lot more than just that to make my redhead happy... but it sure would be a step in the right direction. She hates it when I drive anything in her 'her' yard!

I accidentally ran over a couple of flowers last year...I thought I was going to have to move or something. Dang, I didn't know such a sweet sunday school teacher could yell like that! :ashamed: I was in the Navy and I didn't even know some of those words...lol... Been putting up with her 37 years...guess I'll keep her around awhile longer. :D Oh yeah, the other worse thing is if I let my chickens out to forage and they get into her precious flowers. Good Lord, nothing like a little red headed woman flying out the front door screaming at chickens...they haul butt to another spot real quick. 71 acres and they go straight for her blooming flowers...fried chicken very quickly :licking:
