Shearing too many bolts on cutter

/ Shearing too many bolts on cutter #11
I am a new owner, LS XR3037 shuttle shifter. Just bought 12 acres of overgrown land with tons of junk hidden in the weeds. My problem is shearing bolts on the cutter. I have sheared most of them engaging the pto. Sheared them at the recommended 1200 rpms, sheared them at 1000 rpms. Being a rookie we finally figured the pto is in manual mode. Should I be operating in auto? Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this incorrectly, but you are NOT engaging the PTO at 1000/1200 rpm initially? Use a grade 5 bolt and bring it up to operating speed slowly.

I always start my B.H. by letting the clutch out slowly at a little over idle and slowly and smoothly bring my RPMs up to operating speed.

I was thinking the same thing as phiferpharm. I went through a couple of shear bolts as at first because I was bringing the PTO speed up to 540 and then engaging the PTO. Keep it at idle and engage the PTO and then gradually bring it to full speed. The only time I break one now is if I hit one of the MANY rocks on our land!

Thanks for all the reply's. I think I figured out the problem. He was sitting in the seat. I assumed the little blue propeller looking symbol on the tach as 1200 rpms meant that It was the engagement point. At dead idle I was able to engage the pto with the electric switch with no problem. Even better, put the pto switch in auto mode and engage using the clutch. This was the first day I was able to put the tractor in the barn without a sheared bolt!

DPMONK - Great to hear, I did the SAME thing, that's why I brought it up and concurred with the other poster.

As for:

Who was not reading what the OP said.

One thing I HAVE noticed since being a relative newbie on this forum is that there are certain people who enjoy pointing negativity at others. While my comment did appear to not be in line with what the OP asked, I was speaking from my own personal experience in a very similar situation. Guess it turned out to be correct.

I think we should work towards the saying "if you haven't got anything nice to say, keep your **** mouth shut"...or something like that I believe. There are many times I'll read someone else's comment and wonder if they read the OP or they're sidetracking immensely...I just ignore it.

Well, I actually had read it as he was engaging it with the rpm's up to speed (which was the case). When I had a manual double clutch tractor, it was not the problem as you could feather in the PTO. Now with my my HST/electric PTO, it is not a pleasant sound or feeling if I engage with the engine wound up too much.

On a side note, I had about 10 acres of overgrowth on my property when I purchased the place and went through a bunch of shear bolts. Now that it is cleared, I haven't had one break on almost a year of use.

Correct, that's what I did when I first got mine...took me 2 shear bolts to realize it wasn't going to work. My tractor is an HST as well.

1000 rpm is not "up to speed" It is about 200 rpm above low idle. ... So it is not the case. The lucky circumstance that low idle gets around breaking the bolts is secondary to OPs discovery that "auto" allows him to have manual control engaging the clutch. Odd that auto lets him engage slowly vs "manual".

yes that does seem backward doesn't it. And the operators manual has 20 pages of safety stickers, but not a whole lot of help with engaging the pto. It does say to lower rpms before engaging, but not to bring it down to idle. And it also says that operating in auto will stop the pto from turning when the clutch is in. I kind of had to figure that out on my own.
