What kind of grass are you trying to plant.

Fine fescue for my side yard, and turf Type tall fescue for the rest.

Should i just go for a nice 3 point core aerator instead? I have one of those craftsman tow behinds and it struggles to pull cores even with 140lbs of weight on top of it. It either pokes holes or bounces off.

Also, does anyone make a top dresser for the homeowner? All the ones ive seen are several thousand dollars. There must be more people who'd want something like this than me.

I think you'll find that the home owner types all work like that. You will probably have to rent a motorized, self-propelled unit or step up to the big heavy stuff for the weight to sink the tines all the way in. That will also give you a bigger plug, which will help with fertilizer and seed coverage.

Sometimes I see a guy advertising on craigs list wanting to hire out with his top dresser. Maybe someone in your area too?

A 3 point core aerator with 5 hundred lbs works great on a 48 inch aerator on my kubota bx , and I have a 1300 lb 72 inch for my new holland . I seed and fert first , then aerate , then overseed again .

Can you recommend a model? Does it actually improve your germination rates?

the 48 is a lesco . The 72 inch is a ryanair . New they are about $2k for the 48 and $ 4200 for the 72 inch . ( I found them used ) They definatly improve germination rates , especially when you make double passes .
