Bad day. Murphy was in the field.
My rule has always been if the gun is out of my hand it is unloaded. This applies to hunting.

Been more than one person shot by crossing a fence with loaded long gun leaning on fence, or pulling a loaded rifle up into a tree stand. Best to unload and open the action to be sure. In the tree stand trick you usually wind up looking down the barrel while it bounced into the tree. Let me see, let's put my loaded and safety off shotgun on the ground and stand in front of it while dog steps on trigger. Great idea!
