Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Scotty:

If that is titanium it is worth some money :D! I still have 6 screws, two pins, a plate, and some wire in my ankle, staples in my lung, and shoulder. When it is time to "bake and shake me" my will will request that I go to a smelter; I will be worth some $ :). Jay

Red - if you're in that much pain and the doc says it's a necessity, definitely don't put it off. The longer you wait, the harder it is to recover. Just be sure that, if you smoke, STOP SMOKING and give your body a few months to adjust to the lack of nicotine before the surgery. If you smoke, you lengthen your recovery time by a lot - nicotine really screws up your body's ability to flow oxygenated blood effectively, and that makes for a long recovery. Also, if you can, do some mild cardio exercise during the weeks before the surgery.

I've seen shoulder replacements go really smooth when people are healthy and they do all their physical therapy. I've also had a few friends and family members have an awful time when they didn't take care of themselves before and after the surgery. The good thing about surgery like this is you can play a very big part in how well you do - you just have to train for it like a major competition.

I hope it goes well for you!

I agree with mahlers. If you do not take care of your body your body will take care of you, and the results are usually and ultimately unpleasant . I am slowly starting to learn this lesson .

Red- Please take care of yourself. Jay

Well, I went for an MRI on Thursday, which was an ordeal in itself. I'm too big to go in their tube, so they used what they call an "open MRI". I had back surgery about 20 months ago, so I knew what to expect. I'm semi-claustrophobic, but I had no problem when I had the MRI before the back surgery. The problem this time was that they adjusted my shoulder in some kind of contraption to keep it in the proper position, and it put my shoulder in a very uncomfortable position. I figured I could stand it, but as the time went on, it became extremely uncomfortable. I mean EXTREMELY uncomfortable. If you've had an MRI you know that they tell you to remain as motionless as possible. Well, since the fusion surgery I had in 2006, it is difficult for me to do that. Do you remember when your coach was running you to find out who really wanted to play? I had to use the same kind of mental discipline to keep myself from pushing the "panic button" the technician had given me as I did to keep running those wind sprints forty-two or forty-three years ago. By the time I got out of the thing, I could hardly get off the table.

If they told me I had to do it again, I would say, "fine, just you give me a couple of those 'happy pills' y'all keep around here."

I took the films to the doc on Friday. He studied them himself and read the technician's analysis. He said my rotator cuff, while not torn completely through, was torn very badly. He said a combination of the damage to the rotator cuff and arthritic degeneration of the socket part of my shoulder joint made him afraid that conventional joint-replacement might result in the socket (I forget the exact technical term) fracturing. He said he thought I was a candidate for something called "reverse shoulder replacement".

I said, in my best country hick voice, "Say what?"

He explained that it meant that they attach a new ball joint to the top bone (scapula, maybe?), and a new socket to the lower (humerus) bone. That's just the opposite way from how God did it in the first place. He said that he doesn't do that operation, and that he was sure I wouldn't want him learning how on me, but that there is another doc in the hospital who does do it. I have an appointment with this doctor Wednesday morning.

At the bottom of the linked page are x-rays showing a before-and-after of someone with this type of surgery. The doc I'm going to see wrote the article, and the Hughston Orthopedic Hospital has been in business for a long time. They took good care of me when I had my back surgery, so at least I have confidence in the doctors.

redlevel:

At least you were spared the "inconvenience" of a double run in the MRI machine . It amazes me how they can "fit" you in those MRI position keeping contraptions
:(. Good Luck- Jay

I was searching for a "shoulder" thread and came across this. Now I need to know how the surgery came out. I hope ok.

Anyone else have shoulder problems?

No replacement, just rotator repair. I put it off until I could not reach the radio in my pickup. What was expected to take about two hours went to six because my bones were so soft the surgeon ended up having to insert some kind of teflon bolts.

I firmly believe that if not for my physical therapist that I would never have been able to raise my arm above shoulder level again. This man had spent his Army time at Walter Reed working with vets mostly with injurys sustained in the middle east. I did put the effort in as I did when I had meniscus and PCL surgury on one of my knees but this guy could "read" my movement and knew where to push me, etc. I have an occasional day when I notice my shoulder but that reminds me not to push it to hard. Maybe just put a hundred bales of hay up in the loft and save the next one hundred for tomorrow, lol!

My wife has been getting the rooster comb shots in her knees and now they took some of her blood, treated it and put some back. Her knees are a bit stiff but she does not have the pain as before and cortizone would not help any longer. I don't know if this kind of therapy is done on shoulders? We go back on November ninth. I will have to ask.

She has heart issues, high BP, leaky and malformed valves, irregular beat along with a miriad of other maladies so she wants to avoid knee replacement as long as possible.

I've had 2 shoulder surgeries on my right side. First one the surgery went well and rehab was ****. Second one they relocated my biceps tendon from my shoulder to my arm. The surgery and recovery for about a week was awful, but after that and weeks of not being able to do anything with my arm.....rehab went great! Pretty much pain free now, but a lot of hard work can get it sore on occasion. Installing helicopter rotor blades can get it sore for sure! Anyway, my lessen from all this was that if it's keeping you at night it's time to get it fixed!

they installed the weather package chip in the knee durring repair ! :) I can tell a full day in advance that its going to snow before the weatherman even knows ! :( Hopefully they dont still offer that option ! ;)
The docs have been installing that weather chip since 1958 when I broke my left knee. My left knee tells me when it is going to rain and the right one tells me when it is going to snow. The more painful it is the more we are going to get.
