Yeah, a few seconds deadheading the pump is no problem. It is when people push the control valve into detent and then go brush hog 40 acres. After a period of time the fluid heats up and the pump heats up, and seals can melt etc. If you are attuned to your machine, you know "something is not right" immediately, but you cannot expect a new person to be attuned to the sounds and responses of their new machine.

I agree, I just purchased my tractor this spring and shortly after removing the backhoe I went out and started it up. As a Flight Instructor you become VERY in tune with the slightest change in sounds and with my tractor the sound was just not quite right. Took about one minute of moving levers before shutting the pump off and sound was normal. Who knew? This was a very informative thread

It sounds like you are pretty much attuned to machinery, but many people pay no attention to sights, sounds and smells. Lots of folks will run engines without oil until they lock up. Never mind that increasing knocking sound...wonder what that could be?:)

You mean like when your wife says the car is making a funny noise and you have learned to not ask questions because she will say "idunno"..

Well, I spent many decades, listening to people try to describe what they think is wrong or what happened to malfunctioning telephony equipment. I learned how to be a good listener, and I realized if you asked the right questions, you can get more out of people than they even know themselves. But some people are totally clueless even under the most thorough questioning. I doubt hypnosis would pull the info you need out of some. The reason is because they just don't observe or record anything. But most folks, if you ask the right questions, you can pull a lot of useful information out of them.

In many cases equipment can be diagnosed without ever laying a hand or an instrument on it. Just look at it, listen to it, and smell it. Just times just walking into the equipment room and taking a deep breath will tell you what you need to know.
