He has never liked attention or affection. He was more curious and interested in new people when he was younger, but after rubbing some mud on you, he lost interest and wondered off. Now he is more interested in sleeping most of the day. He hates the heat and as it's warming up, he goes deeper into the shade and under the brush in the pond to stay cool. You need to bribe him to come out and pose for pictures with red apples or pop tarts. He loves those the best, but most sweets work. As long as he is eating, he will stand there and tolerate being petted or having a hat put on his head for a silly picture. Once the food is gone, he's headed back to his resting spot.

Summer is tough for Oscar. He turned 5 on August 9th and we where going to measure him to figure out what he weighs, but he is either sleeping in his house, or in the pond. Rare to find him out and about when it's light out. We switched food from giving him Ol Roy from Walmart to giving him the same feed we feed the horses. Turns out everyone loves it, so we also give it to the ducks, the geese and the goats. We've also given up on trying to use the feeder. The horses just eat it all, so now we give Oscar his food in his house where it's harder for the horses to steel it from him. They still get it because Oscar really doesn't seem to care. Same thing with the ducks and geese. They just go into his house with him and eat all they want. One of these days I'm hoping to get a picture of all the ducks in his house with him, but so far, they run off as soon as I see them. With the cooler temps, he has started to wonder around again and tear up the ground. Pretty soon I'll get those measurements and figure out what he weights.

Eddie,
We always had to put all our horses in seperate stalls for eating time. One horse always was a pig and ate the older horses feed. This is a good thing to see all are eating all of their feed or off their feed.

Ducks for Oscar. Yeah! Maybe you can signs on the ducks that says............"I voted for Oscar".
hugs, Brandi

His house has always been there, but my original plan was to have a couple of longhorns in there with him. I never wanted horses, that's Karen's dream. Oscar got to the point he was tearing everything up, rubbing mud on everything, and taking things and losing them in the woods. While I found him entertaining, others would get upset when he rubbed mud on them, or ate the valve stems off of their car. I do have to admit getting tired of taking the time and paying to fix those flat tires. :) So we built is house in the pasture and ran a hot wire to keep him in there. Once he had the house, he never tried to leave the pasture. Everything is right there for him, his food, the pond and his house. He would regularly escape, but always came back. If you chased him or scared him, he would even run right through the hot wire, screaming like he was dying, to get to his house!!!!

We have a goat that is obsessed with his shed. He only leaves it for a little bit, doesn't like to leave if I need to clean it. He's been here 15 years, born here, and will die here. Funny how attached animals are to their homes, like people, I suppose.

Wow, what a great thread. I was able to read the first half and then had to skip to the end just to see how Oscar turned out. Eddie, I am happy for you and so glad Oscar is doing well. If I visited, he could rub mud on my legs all day long if thats what he wanted to do. And I would make sure to wear shoes with shoestrings in case he wanted to re-live his childhood. No problem. Its good to see people with good hearts taking in animal friends. You have handled this whole ordeal as a true gentleman, all those jokes, and you just brushed them off. What a great example. Best wishes to you and family, and of course, that includes Oscar.
