Kev,

For some reason or another goldfish never held much interest for me ... beyond using them as feeders when I had fish that consumed them :D

Might hafta reconsider though, if I ever get a pond set up outside ...

/ Good morning!!!! #39,223
... RS. You want fish on a budget. Sneak into the neighbors pond and catch some small bass and bluegill. Then watch them grow. You'll have supper one night eventually. :).
Yup ... it's my wife that wants them for free (or maybe not at all )

She called yesterday after she finished her route as I was about to leave the property in town, to see if I had gotten home yet, and had I stopped to pick up food for the kitten ?

I mentioned that I was going to swing by Two Turtles just to have a look-see after I left (never been there) before stopping at the other pet store to pick up kitten food ... so it was gonna be a little while. She - of course - was wanting the little kitty fed immediately upon her arrival home ... so I suggested she might want to swing by herself and pick up the kitty food.

Then I got to hear a whole raft of chit about me spending money on fish, and how much were these fish gonna cost exactly ?, and we can't afford it blah, blah, etc., etc. ...

Of course, considering that I was only going to L-O-O-K and wasn't planning on spending any money at all, I found this somewhat ironic ... particularly in light of the fact that I wasn't the one who just drug home a half-dead, sickly kitten, likely in need of some serious veterinary care ...

Speaking of ponds and bass though, I spent a little time just the other day while was over at a friend's, down at his pond watching a large mouth bass (probably 8") stalking a bunch of bait fish.

But back before I got the Green Terrors, I did have the 55 set up as a cold water tank ... with fish I had caught locally - bullhead cats and, at one point, a small mouth bass ... who was actually pretty sharp looking' ...

Thanks for showing me that link. I came in for a quick cup of tea a while back and ended up reading your entire thread from beginning to end. Now it's way too dark to go back outside ! You have some really good pictures, particularly those in black and white, and it's great that you have the memories to go with them too.

Thanks, when dad was waiting for Dday he was camping in your neck of the woods, a little south of you, on the other side of the bay from Cardiff. He watched the invasion ships go out from Cardiff, and he went across within the week.

... RS, we need pics of that still ...
No problemo ...

He makes several different kinds of stills, component parts for them, and will do custom orders and fab work.

I've only checked out the one in picture below ... it's taller than I am and is like a work of art ... polished copper and stainless ...

... preferably with something dribbling out the end of it
Can't help ya on that count :D

Been replacing the 4' fluorescent tubes in the garage with LEDs. These are a straight swap for the tubes, no rewiring or ballast removal required. The LEDs are MUCH brighter than the old bulbs, which helps justify the $35/pair cost. Haven't checked on energy savings yet, which may not be as great since the ballasts are still in use.
I've heard talk of some 8' T-12 LED bulbs that you don't even need the ballast for ... they were pretty pricey though, IIRC.

I'll bet the price drops dramatically on these LED bulbs over the next year or so ... but I'll probably keep using my supply of free fluorescents until I run out.

That's unlike anything I've seen. I would expect to see a worm condenser? Apparently it's for hi tech hillbilly's! :)

Breaking News!

You remember my Niece that I told you about last month, the one that was going to quite her job to become a full time alligator catcher, the one with the bloody leg . . .well she was on TV again today and then later got a call to be on Good Morning America (Nov.8). She was still excited about it as she told us what happened - Here is what happened this morning -

Good morning. Hadn't taken more than 6 steps outside this morning when, from almost nowhere, came a great whoosh above our heads, causing both dog and me to duck down. The sound soon died and we looked up to see the tail end of a huge flock of starlings. Have to see if they are around at dusk, they sometimes put on fantastic aerial displays.

The weather forecaster says rain and the sky says rain, although not a drop yet. I'm sure it's holding back and waiting for me to poke my head outside again.

I got the daylight version (more bluish) ... after consulting with The Woman, any future acquisitions will probably be the warm white variety, as that's what she prefers for general lighting in the house. It would sure be nice if the higher wattage bulbs were available at a reasonable price, as I find that with getting older I need more light not less :D

The, "warm white" LEDs generally do look better in those rooms where you just want to sit down and rest. Look for a number on the packaging called the "Color Temperature" -that tells you just how "warm" the light will be. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K).

A light labelled as 2,700K will be "very warm", or "soft white". It's very much towards the red end of the spectrum.

3,000K is what most call "warm white". A relaxing light that is easy on the eye.

4,000K and above and it starts to look clinically white - can be ok for bathrooms and kitchens, but most would find this too stark for where you sit down and watch TV.

6,000K. LEDs are available at this and above, but indoors this will look a very harsh, almost blue white.

Hope the bulbs work out. I have a project at work that we are implementing some rather expensive 12v LEDs from Rigid Industries. they seem to be about 3-4 times everybody else's price. Very bright, but the give off quite a bit of heat which surprised me. Light energy is light energy.

In Europe lamp packaging now shows the actual light output in lumens. Do you have that too ?

Most here still don't realise that what they need with LEDs is lumens, not watts. For those of us that have grown up with tungsten bulbs, it's still hard to think that watts only really tell how much power a lamp is wasting. The better quality LEDs are now putting out over 100 lumens for every watt they waste in heat.

41 going to only 57, but sunshine returns.

Cooled off enough last night that I built a fire in the woodstove, and expect to need it today and tonight.

Don, a very brave woman to tackle that big gator.

Eric, yes our LEDs are packaged with lumens. We stocked up on so many incandescent bulbs when CFLs looked to become the required replacement, that we haven't bought any LEDs yet, although I'm giving it more thought now that the prices are dropping.

Coffee is done brewing. 26° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 51° with sun all day. Staring on winterizing garden pond. Have to get pump out and blowout water lines with air compressor.
Eric, I bought the same bulbs as RS. They are 5000 Kelvins and 760 Lumens. They are not dimmable. But work great in bath, kitchen, laundry room, closets and work areas. My wife and I think the 2700 Kelvin bulbs are to soft. Still using the Florecent lights in livingroom and bedroom. My motorhome is almost 100% LED. Most are around 5000 Kelvins. Even headlights. Except a couple over lounge chairs and bed. When running on batteries very little current draw for lights.
Good Morning All.

Good Morning, 67 going to 82 with a 60% chance of rain. Radar shows it hitting Larro and Drew more solid than me. Watch out guys...

Wanna say thanks for all the compliments on the run-in, makes my chest swell :D

RS, that is how I got started on goldfish, they were feeders for my Oscars, then someone bought my Oscars and I was left with a 30 gal tank of feeders and wha-la.

Farmer, you are a better man than I, guess I need to learn patience. If I am spending that kind of money it had better be going home with me... drove me crazy waiting 3 days to get mine.

Wow Don, that is one big gator, even for this area

Today I am washing the Horse cart I am selling in GA next week, and digging out supplies to take, and finish loading the trailer.

Hope everyone stays safe and has a good day

45 right now...not going to go much higher...49 being the predicted high.
Mowed the lawn (outside the fenced in area) and mulched most of the fallen leaves yesterday. The backyard (fenced in area) needs to be mowed again (did it last week), so that's the chore of the day.

42 out this AM, high mid 60's. Yesterday was a nothing day, other than paying respects to an old friend. Today will be more of the same - nothing, with a week of nothing planned.

Think I'll go for a walk.

Enjoy the day, all, be safe!

Good Morning! 52F @ 6:30AM. Periods of rain. High 56F. Winds SE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall near a quarter of an inch.

RS, that still is a thing of beauty! But since folks interested in distilling are usually doing it to save money on hooch, I wonder how many would be willing to spring for all the shiny gew gaws?

Good description of color temperature, Eric. Thanks.

Well the storms that were predicted for a midnight arrival have yet to darken our skies, having once again fallen apart as they encountered the coastal mountain ranges. Totals are now predicted to be less than an inch through Monday. But we do get the reduced temperatures, about ten degrees F below normal. I've lit the wood stove this morning to take the chill off, and will be using the cooler weather as an excuse to spend the day at the desk chasing paperwork.

Finally managed to catch up with a neighbor who needed a fan spacer trimmed for his truck. It was a complex aluminum extrusion that couldn't be held in the three jaw chuck because of all the slots in it, so instead of swapping to the four jaw I used the central mounting hole to bolt it down to the mill table and fly cut it to length. This fellow also owns a backhoe and is pretty handy around heavy equipment, so helping out with his pet truck restoration should get me some good advise when it comes time to clear the pad for the shop.

As promised I shot a few pics of the gilded bodywork yesterday, then carried on and updated the painting article I started last year to include more details. You'll find that write up here.

Don, years ago there was a picture floating around of an even bigger gator that came out of those same oxbow lakes. It was discovered during a construction project hiding in a culvert tube or something like that. You're niece is braver than I.

Eric, here is a link to one of the lights I'm using.

RDS-Series 20" - Spot Surface Cool White Black 20"... | Rigid Industries
Specifications:
Watts: 150
Amp Draw: 10.87
LED's: 40
Raw Lumens: 10460

rs, you are a much bigger aquarium enthusiast than I. That fmueller guy has forgotten more than I've ever known about it. I just try to keep some fish to give the kiddos another avenue of interest.

Nice clear, cool day outside today. College football was crazy for more than a few teams yesterday. MotoGP world championship was won by Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo of Spain by riding one of his best races to stave off the Honda riders.

Eric, those look really nice. I loved the old Beemer candy apple paint where they'd outline the perimeter with black over the candy apple.

Here's a photo of Chip Foose mustang he did for Johnny Depp's wife Amber Heard.
