I used a limit switch on one of my projects. ebay purchase (5 pc TEMCo Micro Limit Switch Short Roller Lever Arm SPDT Snap Action home LOT) 5.85 for 5 -- I think it will work for you.

Don't over-engineer the thing. Better to use drawers. The first time you're working on a project and need something from underneath, you have to clear the top to get at it. Useless endeavor. It's like parking your car over the tool box. It ranks right up there with screen doors on a submarine. :confused3:

If you're using a linear actuator to raise the lid, why do you need a lock? Use a keyed switch for the actuator itself.

I wouldn't use any security measures except hiding it. Any security measures will give away the hiding spot. Any thief is in a huge hurry and likely searching at night with a flashlight. They won't ever notice a well hidden compartment inside the bench.
