Lots of us have done this pulling tires logs I beams and even a tree. Tires are good for initial smoothing but are not as good for seed covering as you can bury some seeds and pull them out of place in other spots.

For seed bed prep and broadcast seed covering I prefer using a spike tooth harrow. Much less movement of the seed for a more uniform stand. Here is one I built for about $250 with an 8' width. I used 5/8" sucker rod for the teeth with staggered spacing. In the first two pictures notice the grass is growing well in the small ridges. The last picture shows the grass filled in uniformly in the spring.

Attach the tires to the top of a piece of chain link fence. Does a better job than just dragging the tires along the ground. Also helps if you have steel rims to go along with the tires for additional weight.

Good luck

I use a chain harrow behind my ATV

I found a homemade harrow while bush hogging my neighbors field, glad the teeth were pointed down. It is 4 pieces of pipe with heavy "hay rake teeth" on it. I use it on my garden for cover crop and it works great. Would work good on pasture as well. Ed

Try this thread that I started back in '13... I had no clue as to what I was after (extreme newbie that I was :)) but TBN came through with heaps of advice.

I eventually bought a drag-chain harrow as I wasn't fussed about getting into the corners of the paddock... I use a manure fork to get at those droppings prior to harrowing, then I run my lawn tractor over the spread 'balls' to mulch.

If I needed a "cow pie" breaker type harrow, or small field harrow I would do a home made implement..
Homemade because that is something I can do myself just because I can mostly..

Like the pictures in post #3 show, I would start with a somewhat universal 3pt implement frame.. And build a multi row harrow attachment to quick attach under the tool frame.. Something with multiple staggered rows of ground engaging teeth that is both replaceable teeth and can be run reversible to maximize ware and life of the cutting edges..

Now on a universal 3pt type tool frame that would give the option of running a several shallow chisel diggers ahead of the harrow in kind of a pasture renovator type tool... Or a thatch rake type implement behind the harrow..
Your only limit is your imagination....

Good luck..

Craigslist often has these old spike-tooth harrows for sale. They are about 4-5 feet wide but are made to fit together into wider sections. One of them and a boom pole to lift it would be an easy implement to adapt to your use.

Bruce

We used to have the JD section harrows many years ago on the farm and they worked pretty well. We would just drag them to a parking place in most cases. But they were easy to pick up and load in a truck if needed. When I built mine in post 3 I was working from memory of these older section harrows.

Funny that your second attachment with the pictures of spike tooth harrows has my home built unit in it. I see a China company has picked up the image and is trying to market it. If you look closely at the pin connections you can see that I had attempted to make it swivel and originally had chains running to the rear. That did not work because the forward motion would cause the rear to tilt up. I welded up the joint and added the bracing and used it to finish my lawn. If I were to rework it from scratch the pin/swivel joints should be close to the ground for a straight pull. Then the harrow section could float correctly.

China will steal anything including my designs with flaws built in. China Spike Tooth Harrow with Staggered Teeth - China Spike Tooth Harrows, Spike or Tine Harrow
