Has anybody built a box blade?

The cutting edge is only 6" tall. What about the rest of the back? Straight and flat will work, but cjrved is better and stronger.

Or are you talking about building something more like a landplane with no back?

I have a cheap chinese scarifier similar to this, and wouldn't mind converting it to a box blade, so any pics and measurements anyone cares to post may come in handy when I eventually go this way, if I do! I have a used grader blade cutting edge I thought I may be able to use in it.

That looks like it would work. Use the grader blade on the back and get some 3/16" for the sides and depending on how well you weld have a welder do it or weld it yourself. Give it a try, what the heck. Seems like you are 3/4 of the way there in materials.

Tip your BB over and look at how the cutting edges are fastened. Every one I've looked at are bolted to an angle iron. Sets the angle of the front one and the rear one at the same time.

I'm sure you have the talent to do this. So, you might also consider a hinged rear blade??? Really improves the BB's ability to cut going forward. Mine can be bolted solid, but I never do, always just let it swing and control the cut with the tractor 3pt.

As for strength with a straight back. I wouldn't worry about that too much. I'd build my strength into the Box. Use 3/8" if you can. You'll gain a bunch of strength and weight which are both important.

By using commercial grade cutting edges you will also add a LOT of strength and weight. Select and purchase the cutting edges before you start. There are variations in how they bolt on. You need to know how yours are fastened BEFORE you build the box.

Anxious to see your progress on this project!!!! :)

…and keep tabs on the build cost, I want to see if you can bring it in for less then 800$ Canadian :|

I was planning on having a flat back with a commercial cutting edge on the front and back. I could add a piece of angle iron or square tubing at the top if needed for strength. I think a 3/8 thick back with the cutting edge and a brace again both of the hitch mounts will be strong enough. I would have to make the back much thinner to roll it. This is going on a DK40 with r4 tires not a bull dozer. Could someone post a picture of the hinged back? I have never seen such. I will definitely keep a tab, but I don't track shop supplies like welding rods and grinding wheels.

Of all the pictures I've got of Box Blades I only found one showing the hinged rear blade. Google search "Gannon" or "Land Pride" BB's. They'll have some good pics. I've got a LP and have 20 or more pics of it but none of the hinged blade. The back side of the blade rests against the heavy angle iron that the front blade bolts to. At each end is a small bracket welded to the hinged blade with a matching bracket welded to the BB frame. Insert a short bolt/nut in each one and the hinged blade becomes a fixed blade.

Here's the only pic I can find in my files.

What happens to the hinged part when you back up?

Sure, no problem, here is a used one that is for sale for less and some new ones that start at that price and top out at ~1100$

CHE Box Scraper $750.00 | parts, accessories | Kingston | Kijiji
NEW 54" / 5' / 6' / 7' BOX BLADES (box scraper) Heavy Duty | outdoor tools, storage | Barrie | Kijiji

If you can't build it for 800$ your time and hydro electricity to cut and weld it must be free :|

Mine cost 860$ new and delivered, but that was several years ago and steel prices plus hydro have inflated since.

I made mine a few years ago, mostly from stuff around the farm. To hold the scarifiers, I used two pieces of channel back to back with the space between them a little larger than the scarifier. I made mine too tight and had to shave a bit of each edge of the scarifier to get them in. The top and bottom of the scarifier holder is flat stock cut to length to space the scarifiers equally. I made fancy self locking pins up to hold the scarifier at desired height, that was a waste of time, lost a couple of them. Now just have round stock with a hole drilled in each end and use R-Pins, lot simpler and works better. To hold the pins, I found a piece of angle iron that they fit nicey into and cut into one inch pieces.

I put the 2" square stock running back from the three point hitch too close to where the scarifier is, not enough room for R-Pin between it and scarifier. I mounted receivers on these members for gauge wheels but have use them more for receiver hitches to haul trailer around than gauge wheels.

Go to your highway department or anyone else who has graders and ask for a couple of used cutting edges. These are usually scrap, usless they have changed over to the carbide tipped ones. They go through the old style ones by the truck load. There is plenty meat left on them for home use. You will have to cut them to lenght. I mounted two cutting edges on mine, back to back. One for dragging, and one for pushing. When cutting to length, bolt them together so the holes will line up when your finished and then just bolt them through the back. If they are in a good mood, ask for half a dozen of the proper bolts, they're called plough bolts. They go through them by the bucket full.

I made up a set of plans before construction, I'll see if I can find them.
