Has anybody built a box blade?

I refuse to buy a box blade that doesn't have double ears that the hitch pin goes through. The ones that just have the pin sticking out might be alright for a BX. My box blade had the reinforcement and I still bent them. I had to weld plate steel over the top of them. My box blade has 3 separate braces to help the back from bending.

What happens to the hinged part when you back up?

It simply swings down against the BB. Acts just like a solid rear blade. that's what makes it so useable. Going forward it swings loose allowing the front blade to cut however deep you want and/or can pull. When you back up it's just like any other BB. Give it some serious consideration in your build.

I've got a 5' solid rear blade that I use on my 2210. Got a 7' swinging rear blade that I use on the other tractors. I much prefer the swinging design. Just been too lazy to modify the small one.

Mine cost 860$ new and delivered, but that was several years ago and steel prices plus hydro have inflated since.

Thanks for posting these. This will give the OP an idea of how he wants to design his. These are what I consider light/medium duty BBs. But they are a good start. And can be built for less money.

Yep. That's why I wanted Trials to post pictures. Looking at your pics and the ones he posted you can easily spot weak areas. 1/4" flat bar with no bracing on the hitch brackets will not hold up. Also need more bracing of the 3pt tower than two pieces of flat bar that's bolted to the rear wall. Build it strong and build it once.

The tower on my box blade is pretty sturdy. It is made out of pretty thick steel either 3/8 or 1/2. I will measure it later. I have been un able to bend the tower with my L3240. The DK 40 is pretty close in strength. I think if you chained them up the L would drag the DK backwards.

I keep my box blade tailgate unpinned all the time too, no issues with fine grading imo.

Seeing the pictures reminds me that there are two basic types, Standard and High Back.

It makes a difference on the price, when comparing box blades.
