Buying Advice undecided about an 8n or international

The problem digging with a non-live pto is that the auger and the lift are running together. If you want to stop the auger and lift the digger while not turning, you have a problem. I've dug many holes with my Ferguson TO-30 , If you have to stop the auger and lift out of the hole you cannot do it without disconnecting the PTO shaft, also traveling from Hole to Hole you have to keep the pto turning to keep the lift up. Much better with a live pto to dig holes.

I haven't had my 8n here for years, but I recalled it having a lever to disconnect the pto, left side rear of the clutch. Could be a bad recollection though, I have sat on many tractors since I sold it.

I said it should work, not that it was the best solution, and went on to give reasons why I would chose the newer, bigger, heavier, higher horse tractor.

You said it SHOULD WORK FINE. The problem is the lift pump is offline when the PTO is. That's why the operational characteristics of an 8N and PHD are only marginally better than hand tools.

Don't take this the wrong way, but asking whether to pick an 8N or a 424 is sort of like should I buy a 13" black and white TV for $500 or a 50" LED 1080p HD TV for $700.

424.... an 8N is a tractor you use until you can get something proper.

Thanks for the explanation. I was not understanding why you couldn't use the PHD while in Neutral. But not being able to lift without the PHD running may be very inconvenient at times.

The problem with post hole digging with a Gray tractor is that you are half out of control all the time. That if nothing else makes the thing dangerous to a certain extent. You are literally flying that damned auger constantly dipping and bobbing which wears you out believe me. That's with 2 of you. Then when you get stuck you can't stop it in time and out comes the shovels, bars pick, ughhh. Then if you are really unlucky you will get into some clay a bit too deep and it grabs. Backing out of that is a nightmare and more often than not you end up removing it and taking the auger cover off and removing the auger so you can back and wiggle and dig it up out of the clay. Did I miss something:thumbdown:

Apparently Creamer, Rick B has a tude about 8Ns. Just to put it in perspective. Having an 8N is a heck of a lot better than having no tractor at all. You have to understand that any of those early tractor are rudimentary at best. Once you get into 60s and newer the functionality improves greatly. Live hydraulics and PTO are a great improvement. More weight, more HP, ability to reverse are also extremely handy. A hydraulic auger is even better than a mechanical auger, but anything is better than doing it by hand! I stand by the statement that it should work fine, not that there aren't much better tractors for it.
FWIW, I wouldn't pay more than $800 for an 8N, and would recommend you increase your budget a bit and get as big and new a tractor as you can afford.

getting alot of good info here. the guy doesn't want to come down on the 424 but the 430 has all new tires and everything works fine. one is 1800 the other is 1900

I currently have a Case 530, which is pretty close to the 430. It seems like a good tractor thus far. Parts availability is decent, and the price seems good. Problems with them are pretty well known, and the fixes well documented. Here a decent 30-50 horse tractor is going to run $4000-$7000. I bought mine cheaper but with some problems and bad tires.

is the $1900 a good price on the international 424? gas with no power steering. has new carb and crank shaft.

I haven't sent too many out there with this horsepower price and live pto. I hate to rush but don't want to lose a good deal either
