If it's a old JD, it has probably consumed untold gallons of ULSD and older engines don't fare well on low sulfur diesel, especially things like injector pintles (like I stated before). I'd suspect a dropped injector in as much as it 'started to miss', a good sign that an injector spray pattern has degraded to the point where it no longer atomizes the fuel. Fuel has to be sprayed in to ignite. Drops or spurts don't work.

I'd pull the injectors (no big task) and have them bench tested at a reputable diesel engine facility.

I don't think "Tree Huggers" had anything to do with it. Lead or tetra-ethyl was banned in gasoline and lead was banned in paint because it was causing brain damage in children. So I guess you could say "Children Huggers" were the ones who got lead in gasoline and paint banned. There is tons of research out there, Google it. If someone owns a house built and painted in the 50-60 and painted with lead paint, sale of the dwelling is almost impossible.

If you try cracking the injector lines with the engine running be sure to wear some safety glasses. It's not as if the diesel fuel will squirt all over the place but taking the " better safe than sorry" approach is always a good idea.

I also have a pair of heavy Rubbermaid, rubber gloves I wear in addition to the glasses when loosening injector or hydraulic lines. Diesel fuel or hydraulic fluid under pressure and skin do not like one another.

If eliminating lead and sulfur was done to eliminate brain damage in children, why have we so many brain dead, stupid and dysfunctional children? I vote we put the lead back in and put kids back into the future work force.
