Best brake system for dual tandem gooseneck trailer

Thanks Aaron, I might have to give Kaufman a call to see what they did, that must be their delivery rig. From your link, it seems that it's done in Europe all the time. I'd like to pull a 10t a/b equipment trlr with EITHER a "juice" truck or an a/b truck.

I recently rebuilt my trailer suspension. Now 10,000 miles later and I'm already seeing significant wear. Just can't grease the bolts often enough. Wishing I had gone torsion.

I'm not sold on Torsion. I have had a few trailers with it and while they ride nice there is no way to balance the load between axles. I have seen more bent axles with torsion due to this.

Thanks for all the trailer brake advise guys esp you DP. My reason for new axles
is that I suspect I have a bent spindle. Two of the tires show extra wear when on
pavement. Bearings are good. I've gotten under trailer and measured a fixed point
on each axle to the pull point on the hitch, loosened ubolts and gotten the axle
alignment spot on. My issue is this has been a trailer used by many people. I have
a customer 50 miles away that likes to haul his own material. He drives in very early
drops his trailer, hooks to mines and does this routine until his job is done. I am in
the plant business. So I am sure he has pulled my loaded trailer across several curbs.

Would the 2 tires happen to be the front tire on each side? From my experience, that's completely normal. On a tandem anything, it's the front tire that takes the beating from dragging sideways during turns.

Can you post a picture of the worn tires vs the non-worn tires?

My experience with one axle wearing quicker is the trailer not sitting level. If it sits nose low it pivots around that axle. Vise versa if tail low.

I pulled the rear axle out a month ago. I picked up the side with the worn tires
by running a chain thru the wheels, I turned the axle tube by hand and there
is a definite wobble. The tires are now off, hub is off and by eye the spindle
looks bent. I neighboring machinist let me borrow his axle jig to set it in
but that will tell me how far off it is. On smaller axles replacing the spindle
is an option but so far no one will sell me a spindle due to liability. A dealer
gave me rockwell's email and the response was no unless I was an axle
manufacturer. It looks like my only repair is to replace I am going today to
look at 3 axles about 10 miles away. He resales govt surplus equipment and
says he has 1 10k axle with brakes and 2 10k axles no brakes all dexter.
I am curious where is the need for a 10k axle with no brakes?

DP, have you ever heard of a elec. to air set up? In other words to allow a non air truck to use an A/B trlr., more of a truck conversion than a trailer mod.

I used to work for a company that converted small trucks like the Sprinter, to trailer tractors. It had an electric compressor and an air brake valve built into the hydraulic brake line, just like an air brake system on farm tractors. It is the only way youre going to accomplish this, as a solenoid piston pump wont have the power density to compress air enough to use it for braking..

For me, this conversion together with commercial grade air brake components and S-cam drum brakes is the way to go when pulling 10 ton loads. In the lighter segment, electric over hydraulic that is triggered by the brake light signal together with a G sensor, works pretty neat too. It needs no plumbing in the tow vehicles hydraulic brake system, just a hitch, a brake light signal and a live wire for the system itself.
