Rancho - A UAS must still be registered. There is no exemption for private use under the new rule. The old law you refer to is for "permission" of commercial uses. Private users don't need "permission" to fly but they do need a registration number now.

'All aircraft weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (approx. 25 kilograms), including payloads such as on-board cameras, must be registered.'

Here is a pdf that helps define what does and does not need to be registered.

http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/faqs/media/UAS_Weights_Registration.pdf

I am considering registering mine now while it is free even though it does not meet the required weight just so when I get the next bigger one that will need to be registered I already have a registration number.

That's a dandy view. Wish I had one to capture images of the property. The satellite and flyover shots by the map companies just don't give the color and detail but the cost of most good ones will pay my property taxes for nearly a year. :)

The DJI Phantom we have was $1,000. And has a live video feed. I've seen very good pics from $250 models.

Now that the FAA wants to license anyone with more than 250 grams, I think you'll see many 249 gram models...

From 400 feet.

249 grams is 8.78 ounces. Just over half a pound. That is pretty small and light. Just looked at them. It looks like there are a lot already under that weight. Gotta love the battery technology these days and light weight strong plastics.

Hey Joe, that's a lot of tractor on that car hauler! What is that vehicle you're towing it with? Looks like it might be a short wheel base Class C RV.
It's a Ford Transit 350 with ecoboost. My bush hog is safely sitting inside it right now out of the weather, doors locked.

It will also carry my Arctic Cat Wildcat inside the same way.

Great photos ! Maybe some day I will get a drone, but we don't have trees to take photos of in most of Nebraska. I do have 2 parcels with trees, so might be fun in those areas ! This is going to lead to all sorts of "Property rights" issues - taking photos from the sky of someone else's property - stepping on the owners use of his property etc - peeing in the woods, etc !

Nice. We have about 4,000 miles on our Transit 250 w/Ecoboost and 3.31 rear axle. Good mpg, good towing, and fast for a cargo van!

It's ridiculously fast not for a van but for any car. Love my van. I just hit 4000 this week.

Just saw a news report that for security reasons, the drone no-fly zone around D.C. has just been expanded to 30 miles from Reagan Nat Airport. Too bad for folks who got new drones for Christmas, but I understand it.

Do you really have 4 separate pins holding your hitch ball in place or is that an optical illusion???

Sorry, but I don't. Is the same no fly zone around every major airport in the U.S. ??

Yes. The hitch is adjustable 5" up or down ad also has all 3 ball sizes plus one pin for the normal use.

It's an awesome hitch but weighs about 35 pounds and is a little too long. But when you need to pull an unfamiliar trailer it's nice to have the options.

I'm thinking of going with one that is just the right length and has a tongue weight scale built in.

It's 5 miles around other airports. All the rules are ridiculous. That's govt for you.

True that. A classic example of those initiating the laws thinking they and their families are more important than yours and mine......

I was president of an airport for 10 years and am a Flight Instructor/Commercial Pilot. I don't normally like to comment on stuff like this with those not familiar with flying, aircraft, airspace and the FAA but I think you will find most pilots will push for clear airspace where aircraft take off and land for safety. The smallest of foreign materials ingested in an engine or even hitting a leading edge of an aircraft can cause serious damage or possibly the loss of life. Airports, at least most, have instrument approaches in which aircraft are becoming close to the ground in lower visibility and cielings not to mention that in the air it is very very difficult so even see an object of this size before it is to late to 'see and avoid'. We used to have an 2 seat exemption ultralight (now LSA) dealer and even though their speed wasn't great they could climb and descend quickly and we had several incidents reported close to the runway with faster, less maneuverable aircraft. Remember an aircraft can not see from the nose down and what is directly overhead (many blind spots). The big problem is many people fly remote control aircraft with an "it can't happen to me" attitude and will irresponsibly fly their RC plane as they are the only one in the sky.
I have had a lot of dealings with the FAA. This is just like the 2 seat ultralights...they sucked them in and eventually created the LSA (light sport aircraft) so the operators ended up having to get a pilots liscense and regist er their aircraft. The FAA is one, if not the most powerful agencies in the US. I think you will see, once registration is in place, they will make an examples out of some.
Also, NO pilot can fly anymore near DC without logged training and follow procedures. Instructors must also have Flight Training on procedures. This has been in place for several years.
