Girls and guns

My daughter was a lot intimidated at first, even though she's shot before the school/media/societal indoctrination had her pretty frightened of the handgun. We worked through it slowly and patiently though and after an hour she was popping off rounds like a pro. I bring that up to say that I made a mistake in waiting this long to teach her to shoot the handgun, those of you with younger kids, I would encourage you to start them as early as you feel they're responsible enough to handle it. If you don't teach them what you want them to learn with action, the rest of the world will teach them something for you and it might not be what you would like.

What caliber(s) were y'all shooting? Looks like .22's...

No thanks !
No guns for us

As expected, off topic and from someone totally unaffected by the laws here.

I am pretty sure the OP is advising if you are going to teach them to shoot, it is best done starting young. No one brought up whether you should or shouldn't own or shoot.

Now to the point at hand. I was raised in a home with guns and we didn't touch them until we hit 13 then dad handed us a .22 with a box of shells and turned us loose, certainly not a wise move.

Our kids were raised in a home with guns and hunting and all were taught respect for guns and trained from a fairly young age with youth rifles then handguns until they were safe and proficient. Two own and carry guns, one is Law Enforcement, our daughter owns a gun, but doesn't keep it in her home. If she choose to get a CCW it would be quite simple.

This Christmas we found out several female members of our extended family who are not gun owners want to get their CCW because of where they live and work. It is going to take a lot of money, time, energy and patience to get them to the point where they should be. So I second the OPs position and leave the whole gun debate for a different thread.

Part of the recent uptick in gun and ammo sales has been women getting into the shooting sports.
Both my daughters shoot, the older grand-daughters shoot and hunt.My wife even shot a little skeet recently.
My oldest grand-daughter shot her first deer(a buck),this year.

Yeah, I reported it as a political post in a non-political thread.

I can understand that. Your in Ontario, Canada. No need for guns here.

Anecdotal comment on firearm training. I have had both military and civilian training and in 40+ years have fired thousands of rounds for many platforms. The day before Christmas my son and I went to the local indoor range and while shooting heavy .357 magnum loads in a revolver I had my first squib fire. It is very loud at this range and both my son and I were wearing both plugs and muffs so no recoil was the first indication and I assumed a hang-fire had occurred. After waiting a couple minutes I was going to clear the handgun, reload and resume firing but something didn’t feel right. On further inspection we found a bullet was indeed lodged in the barrel and I shudder to think what could have happened had we continued shooting.
Thinking back on all the training I have had, I believe more emphasis should be placed on recognizing and dealing with dry, hang and squib fires. With today’s tacticool mentality and the tap, rack and bang training it would be so easy to discharge another round with possibly devastating results. Shoot safely and keep them in the 10-ring!

My dad owns a gun store. A lot of his sales are to women. A lot of the women are 50 plus.

It is bigger than a 22. Probably a 9mm or 380.

It is a full frame 9mm. I have some smaller handguns but wanted them to shoot a full frame for better accuracy and less felt recoil.
