Snow and cold weather wisdom

The wetter the snow, the slipperier the snow for driving. That has been my experience in the 69 years I have been dealing with it.
Others WILL come on here and disagree with me, but that is my experience.

I'll second that - the colder it is the better the traction

My theory is that it's all how it was placed. We get the darn 40 mph winds and drifts that are so hard packed you can walk on top of them without sinking in. Those seem to be the worst for driving and moving. I'm hoping for some melting as the driveway is getting pretty narrow.

Do you have a rear blade?

I'll agree with cold equals better traction.

Back a day or so when the sled runners started sqeaking dobin had to lean into the collar a little harder.

Old, very small snow particles the get blown into drifts in really cold weather seem like concrete.

If you had waxed those sled runners, dobin wouldn't have had to work so hard.:)

Always something to learn here. I once heard that ice in itself isn't slippery. It's the intermediate layer of water that is, if I can understand that. I can't imagine any tire getting traction on a smooth surface regardless, wet or dry.

That may be but as the temperature drops so does the benefit. And getting the sled runners up in the air with the rack loaded with hay was a tad difficult.

Way back when I was a young gaffer and not too bright either, I used to have a car that I used only on the frozen lake. It was my mobile fish shack, complete with the prerequisite hole in the floor for fishing through the ice. This car had bald tires on it, smooth as a babies butt. I had good traction on the ice as long as the ice did not have any snow on it.

I run a 4 in 1 bucket on the back for snow removal so I can keep the forks on the front. It's easier for me to see what I am doing that way. I usually use my little skidder with the 6 way balde but it's' not strong enough to move this hard packed stuff.

This stuff is nasty. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Ive seem some creative BOB houses here but never a car with a hole! That's great! (they call ice fishing huts "bob houses" here-- not sure how ubiquitous that name it)
