They delivered my new 4550 with FEL a few days ago. So far I have put about 7 hours on it.
every thing seems good so far except the temperature gauge appears not to work I removed
and reconnected the wire to the sensor still no go. Any one have a test procedure for the
sensor and or the gauge so that I can try and narrow it down and have the dealer order the correct part.

Hi ChuckK,

I am curious how you know that the temperature gauge is not working. I ask because I have same question on my mPower75 with 25 hours on it I have not seen the temperature gauge move this winter with - maybe just a hair's width up after a long time running - but not sure.

If this is a new tractor your talking about I would call the dealer and have them look at it. Its under warranty!:)

Well I ran pretty hard for about 3 hours to see if the gauge would come off the peg and it never moved.
So something is not working

Well just trying to save a trip back to the dealer and then they will still have to order a part.
Thought there might be someone on here that could point me in the right direction with a test procedure.

It's a 5V system that signals the ECU if I read the service man. correctly. Don't know how you could apply 5v to it to see if you could peg the gauge. Sensor varies the resistance.:confused3:

Thanks, I did a few tests today first I took my 12v test light and connected it to the wire from the sensor and and ground the light lit up so that tells me the sensor is is getting voltage. So then I touched the sensor wire to ground and temp gauge started to go up so I think every thing is working but the sensor. I then took my Fluke and measured the resistance of the sensor cold 2.2k after running the tractor for about 45 min I checked the sensor
again read .8k. Spoke to the dealer and he is going to order the sensor

So Does the manual you have show resistance spec of the sensor.

Yes it has a sensor profile but I have no idea how to read the symbols. My best guess is 5 ohm @ 0 degree C and 50 ohm @ -40 C. Like I stated I have no idea how to interpret the graph and symbols. Maybe your dealer can copy that page and Fax it to you.:confused3:

If I was you I would leave it alone . This a 7 hr tractor ? I would never **** with a dealer that will charge for pu / d on a new machine ! WARRANTY

You need to call your dealer and have them contact Mahindra about this. Some of the Tier IV models do not warm up correctly. I have a thread regarding some of my experiences with my 3550. I suspect your gauge is working correctly, but you need to measure coolant temperature using another sensor - such as a thermocouple- to verify this.

Thanks JB1390. Have you heard if this is a problem with other Tier IVs as well?

I have read your thread about your 3550 can you send me the pictures of your mod.
I will send my email in a private message
Are you speaking about the small hose coming from the top almost center of the radiator.
I will try and get some temperature readings tomorrow with my IR thermometer.
I am not convinced it is the sensor because the Resistance is changing some.
The gauge it self never moves off the peg

There are a few of us 15xx series owners that have noted that the temp gauge does not seem to move even when worked. We have also noted some failures of the temp sending units. That is indicated by the "check engine" light and that gauge pegs to max temp. I don't know how much is common engineering between the series, but as others have mentioned get the dealer involved.

I know it is a problem on the 35 series machines, and I would suspect it affects most of them that have tier 4 emissions and an EGR system. The problem on the 35 series is just too large of a bleed hose, which passes too much coolant around the thermostat. I would suspect that a bleed hose is included in pretty much every design that uses an EGR cooler.

My 4550 has the problem when I blocked most of the flow in the the small hose from EGR to the top of the radiator the gauge comes up to just under the first mark. The dealer has the tractor now to hope fully take care of it.

Chuckk, got my new 4550 Friday & temp gauge is not working. Must be a common problem.

My 20 hour 4540 has the same problem. What does the "bleed hose" do and can it be blocked off?

It can be restricted, but not blocked completely. It is there to remove air from the EGR if bubbles in the cooling system end up there. Your dealer should be able to provide you with a restrictor kit.

I took delivery of my 4550 August last year. I noticed that the temp gauge didn't move off the low peg after I after I did several hours of bush hogging and again no movement on another day after an hour or so FEL leaf mulch moving. The dealer took the tractor in during December for some warranty work. I asked about the temp gauge and the mechanic called Mahindra. They told him (as jb1390 posted) that the bleed hose was too large and passing too much coolant around the thermostat. They did a fix and I got the tractor back. During January with the temps in the mid 20s and no snow on the ground, I thought I would go out and play with my new toy and move mulch. I noticed that after an hour the gauge didn't seem to move off the lower end peg. I talked to the mechanic and he said they did run the tractor after they did the fix and the gauge did move for them. Another mechanic suggested that I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to see if that would help for cold weather work. After doing some research I gave it a try. I put a cardboard piece in front of the radiator that left about 5 inches of the top of the radiator exposed. I had another opportunity to move mulch when the temperature was in the mid 20s and the gauge moved to the mid green range fairly quickly. It did the same on several other occasions. I pulled the cardboard now that the temps will make it occasionally into the 40s. However, I have had no opportunity to use the tractor because it is raining every other day and the ground is just too wet.

So what I know from using the cardboard is that the temp gauge works. I hope that, once it gets hot enough, and I use the tractor hard enough, that the temp gauge will move off the lower peg. If it doesn't I will try a smaller piece of cardboard. Depending on the ambient temp conditions there may be another dealer visit for more warranty work. At least I know how to test to see if the temp gauge is working.
