Am I being cruel to one of my cats?

Oh....just wanted you to know that the cat owning friend of ours has 3 of her own, she keeps them in a cluttered and squalid 500 square foot apartment with a single litterbox in a bathtub, and she is a chain smoker and her place simply REEKS, while ours are in a huge nonsmoking home and all four plus the aggressive guy get a big separate litterbox. And the four who get along well are let out supervised during the better weather months. Who is being cruel?

Turn it around on her and ask her how she can smoke in the apartment while their in there and how they can be content in such a small place. The easy thing to do is ignore her. Sounds to me like you are very good to your pets. Some people like to judge others, makes them feel better about themselves somehow...or so they think.

Is he a nuetered male? Perhaps your vet can help with socialization ideas. Or perhaps Google. The cat has bonded with you and it would be bad to abandon him yet again. He is home. If he is not neutered then you should do that. You are not being cruel to the cat. Just the opposite.

Cruel would have been to let it die on your steps outside in the cold. You worked out a plan and have been loyal to you existing cats and the stray. Ask your relative to mind her own business and worry about her own cats, and not yours.

Keep the cat, it definitely is living the good life with you. Some cats are just anti-social when it comes to other cats (or dogs or other people). If your willing to deal with the situation more power to you. There is a show on Animal Planet called My Cat From ****, the cat guy in the show is more than a bit strange but he does have a good handle on cat behavior. I have seen a couple of episodes where they were dealing with a very similar situation to yours and were able to get the antagonists to live peacefully together in a smaller house or apartment.

I thank you kindly for being such a kind hearted soul when it comes to cats. The more one tries and do the "right" thing when it comes to animals, the tougher the choices get, it seems. My mom spent six grand on a cat (with a heart problem) only to have it put down.

Another cat, she spent a pile of money on could not live with her two cats, so she was going to have it put down. There was blood and fur flying! I insisted I take it, despite having had a cat. At first the cat went berserk and attacked everything and everybody.

On one occassion I was being attacked (tickled) on the couch by a friend and the next thing I knew I was in pain and bleeding. That $%$$ cat had attacked me! I pretty much punched it out, and after that everything was fine, only to get even better. I love animals, but sometimes they do need a slight tune-up I guess. Just like people.

Back in 2005 Wisconsin was going to have/looking at a feral cat hunting season.

So, I would say no, letting it roam would have been. It is legal in Minnesota and South Dakota i think.
We have two well cared for cats, before everybody freaks out.
It is just that this, "i can't take care of my cat, so I let it go FREE..." and somehow that is not being cruel.
You did fine. Letting your pets go wild is cruel, not to mention not good for the indigenous animals.

and that is putting it a lot more politely than I would.

Thanks for your input...yes he is a neutered male and very, very affectionate with humans. My vet has offered suggestions as has Google. but nothing seems to work.
