There's only one thing worse than having kids.

That's not having them!!! Wouldn't trade the experience and life with my kids for anything in the world!

It's been several months since I've been here. I must say the last time I was here there was some terribly hateful people and I see you are still here.

My wife and I share our home with our grandson most of the time. Until last year at her passing my MIL lived with us for 14 years. There was 4 generations living in one house for awhile. With a horse boarding barn, our house and barn is sometimes like Grand Central Station. We also have a bunch of dogs to accompany us. In some accomplishments we are very successful. No regrets.

So RSKY I can really related to your story. Yours is well deserved I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.

Let's face it, the OPs post slapped a bunch of people in the face. He just didn't realize it. I don't think he meant to and maybe he will realize this after he reads the replies.

Differences of opinions and for the most part well stated, but I fail to see anything 'hateful' here. Or maybe I'm just naive ...

I think the most important thing is for people to be happy in their lives. We all can find it in different ways.

As the man says, a difference of opinion is what makes a horse race. While I have had a few insignificant personal goals in my life, the two big ones were to get an education and have a family. I have both, and while both goals have had their ups and downs, I wouldn't trade the experiences for the world. I can't imagine a fulfilled life without a family. I just wish we hadn't stopped with two girls (now have six grand children; three finishing up college; three still in grade school).

Matters not to me nor do the fervent opinions of others on this matter bother me.

But; trying to enforce ones non scientific thought as the right ones, doesn't bother me either.

Mucking about with sceince does bother me. Having different science backed opinions is optional.

With apologies to Mace for corrupting his sentence.

I am not against contributing to fund highways but I do feel I should get a significant reduction in the gasoline taxes I am forced to pay for the highways I don't drive on.

I am not against contributing to fund firemen but I do feel I should get a significant reduction in the property taxes I am forced to pay, since I've never had a fire.

I am not against contributing to fund the Coast Guard but I do feel I should get a significant reduction in the income taxes I am forced to pay, since I'm inland and don't have a boat.

Don't feel pity for her decision. Why would you want selfish people to reproduce?

I have two children and love it but don't understand how this woman's decision not to have children is selfish.
We have so many unwanted children in this world and are well on the path of over population, it is disheartening.
For what ever reason people decide not to reproduce is their free will and breeding is not a requirement of life. Your choice to have children is no better or worse than someone who chooses not to have children.

Reproducing does not require any training, intelligence or planning. It is not a monumental achievement.

I know people who don't have children, who I can't think of as selfish. And others who are clearly selfish. There's all kinds. Those who don't want children should at least be thankful for to the ones who take on the job and do it well. I can understand the resentment for the parents who raise kids to be worse than themselves, that's a shame, and it happens a lot.

Bingo (BCP). If nobody was reproducing society would die a miserable death, would close in upon itself. People get old. Germany is having a problem with insufficient reproduction rates thus has to look at other (perhaps unstable) options. Successive generations are necessary.

I used to think kids were the worst idea ever. Then my wife's biological clock alarm went off and she expressed a few thoughts that made me look at it differently. My thoughts changed to "why the heck did we wait so long?"

My experience is that the enjoyment you get out of life, is dependent on on how much love you share with others. Kids are an bottomless repository for love, and it can make you feel good to pour it out with no limits. This can be viewed as selfish I suppose.
