Is it a big deal to get a 200 amp service to your shop where you guys live?

I had 200 amp service put to mine, and it was no big deal to get it... The hardest part was getting them to agree, how to get the wire to the shop!

They wanted to put it over head, right over my pond, and I fought them until they put a pole AWAY from my pond, and came from the pole to my shop, under ground.

Most home panels are 200 amps. Putting a 200 amp panel in the shop would be 100% of the house panel. The best option would be to have a separate meter base installed, but that's expensive.

That's EXACTLY what I did, and no it wasn't expensive...

Let's see, meter loops are free, I did have to buy a 200 amp load panel, and the under ground cost me something like $345.00. IF I had went over head, that $345 would have went away...

Did they give you crap about hooking it up? I had to show proof of proper septic permits before they would turn the electric on. I could have a temporary pole, but not a meter on the house.

Hooking what up? I got a permit, I did all the wiring, had the inspection and the power co. turned it on...

Way, way less now. I was implying if fully loaded.

When I bought the place they had 1200W of fluorescent lights above an opaque false ceiling just in the kitchen. I have that down to about 60W of LEDs now and the false ceiling is gone. They had a 70W sodium outside on 24/7, which I switched to a 5W LED on photocell. They had a big contractor that used to control the septic pump jumpered on 24/7 buzzing away after putting in a contained float pump, rather than by passing it. On and on with examples like that. Previous house had a 125A panel and that was more than enough other than for welding.
