Pump And Motor Identification
@Coyote Machine-

Great find. I really appreciate it. Thanks for finding those details. Unfortunately I had to leave the pump in the basement and get on the road for work last night so I haven't been able to look for these numbers. I did call home and ask for a more thorough look. I got one additional number back: 5Z4001. I'll have to look more carefully myself when I get home Friday night, but I don't recall seeing any other numbers. I wonder if this pump pre-dates this labeling scheme?

I still think the intake is just chocked down to much and my guess the pump is the 07 pump. If it is then the pump is ok. I have a cross on my log splitter and the intake hose is 1" and pressure is 3/4". The pump is about the same size as yours. If your valve has 1/2" intake then chock it down there not at the pump. Here is a couple pictures.
BTY I am turning my pump CW, that is why the intake is on that side.

That certainly resembles my pump. Both the pressure and suction lines on my setup are/were 3/4". The pressure line goes from 3/4" down to SAE #8 right at the valve. The tank sets the supply/suction line at 3/4" when leaving the tank. I doubt I'd take on the task of redoing that tank and/or enlarging the suction lines. At that point I'm better off just getting a different pump that has 3/4" lines and the same mounting bracket.

How do you like your Cross pump?

I like it has done a good job for me. My splitter is 35 years old the cross has been on it for 10 to 12 years. Gees looking back that thing has split a lot of wood. The other hoses you can't see are just about rotted away and Ijust keep running thinking they well bust anytime. That 1" hose might be chocked down to 3/4" at the pump well have to look. I would change from 3/4" but like I said before turn the pump 180 and get a stright shot to the pump.

You're welcome- hope it helps.
I'd take what you have for numbers, and get some dimensions on the pump; then call Cross to figure out exactly what pump you have. It is possible, and most likely that your pump pre-dates the numbering ID system, BUT that is why their pumps can be IDed by dimensions too.
They should be able to tell you, as I've said before, if your pump will work in your application. I'd also ask them if you can send them pics of the inlet/outlet to the pump, and about the 10.xxGPM limit of your valve to get some final answers.
Act on the info you receive, and get on to making this project complete.
Everything else is just speculation, IMHO.

Thanks for the encouragement. I knew going in this pump wasn't a sure thing. I was hopeful and a bit naive. Thanks to the folks here I've learned a lot along the way.

I need this machine for moving snow and it's been sitting in my neighbors garage so I need to get this going ASAP. I think I'll get a couple fittings that will allow me to plumb the new valve just like the old one (using the same system as the 3PT). I think with those two fittings I can get her running, put back together, and out of the garage. That'll give me the chance to work on the pump issues in the mean time. Frankly, working on it this week was no fun- 10-15F, but at least inside there was no wind. If I can get it going I'll be able to wait for warmer weather.

Glad to hear it's been a good pump for you.

If I return to fixing this pump (or replacing it) I'll see if I can rotate the pump housing so that the suction is more direct route. That will put the pressure side through more fittings but maybe that's easier on the pump?

I think you said when the original owner had the tractor the pump was just pumping a loop with those same hoses and that you looked in the tank and it was swirling around with no foaming. That would indicate to me the suction line is large enough.

I would not think your pump is large enough even with it pumping through a 10 GPM rated valve, but there is a situation where enough of a restriction in a hydraulic line can create cavitation on the back side of the restriction (your FEL joystick spool may be a restriction if it is undersized). Hydraulic fluid contains about 10% dissolved air (not entrained air) that can be released upon lowered pressure on the hydraulic fluid such as when the fluid is forced through a restriction. The back side of the restriction has lower pressure. A mechanic's stethoscope would tell you where the noise is coming from and that likely is where the cavitation is, either at the pump or at the valve in the manner described. Your spool may also have some debris stuck in it from manufacturing or installation. We do know that lowering the relief valve did change the severity of the problem, so the spool assembly is still a question in my mind.

The diagram in the link on Page D21 says curl A1/B1 and Boom A2/B2. He has verified the connections and seems to have mostly just the frothing problem left.
http://www.brand-hyd.com/lv/catalog.pdf

ON page d22 of the attached link. Boom AB1 Curl AB2
Double check that.
The instructions seem to have conflicting instructions

This could also explain the high pressures.

That would just mean it would curl when it should boom and boom when it should curl. As long as the 1s are together and the 2s are together the pressures should be okay.
