Ethics on clearing neighbor's drive ways and private lane

Bon Jour Mon Ami,

I have not mounted the snow removal appliance or the ice chains on the
five year old mule and that is most likely why the snow has not stayed
on my mountain.

I spent $142.00 American dollars for a replacement chute and spout assembly
for it and I bought new belts last year so........................................

They should start a smart phone AP to hook-up people wanting snow removal in exchange for wine, cookies and cake. I might just sell my equipment and put my feet up when it snows. I'm sure I've got some (gifted) crappy home made wine around here somewhere.

Uber Snow Removal.

Just hope none of your neighbors are marketing managers for Taco Bell and climb in your cab and do this.

Sometimes it would take that to get me motivated. It's kind of backwards to when Dad driving the car would flail his fists around him in the back seat!

Now that the Thugs have caught wind of the easy pickens in UBER, curious what changes will take place.

I have a sign on the barn - My tools - My rules - I don't loan equipment that can kill you ... and ... You pay the insurance and I'll plow your drive, garden, mow grass, etc etc etc.

Do what you need to do to get yourself out to the public road and let the rest fend for themselves. Once they take notice that you're no longer doing free road & driveway clearing, maybe they'll appreciate what you'd been doing for them and show a little common courtesy.
Nobody gave you free equipment. If anyone calls or stops by to inquire about snow removal, inform them that they need to pay or find a contractor to do it. I'm not against helping a neighbor out at all. I'll occasionally clear out around their mailboxes for them, but that's mainly because I like our rural carrier. You've tried helping out of the goodness of your heart and it didn't work out so well. They believe they've become entitled to your services at no charge.

We seldom get snow but some thoughts from my experience. I have two old neighbors I do some favors for as they need them and enjoy it greatly. They are quick to say thank you even if I do something they were not expecting. Here that is removing dead trees stumps, cutting a yard or leveling dirt. Not the same as moving snow. Then I have a brand new neighbor who needed some dirt moved and was doing so with a brand new wheel barrow and it came up why his contractor did not do it with his fel and the subject of damaging concert came up. I did not feel comfortable with the tight area it was so never mentioned I could do it for him in 5 minutes and would be glad to but not for how tight camper was parked and so forth. Now if they expected it on regular basis nope.

Then other site is there is an "easement" across our property to three landowners behind us. Dirt road, we own the land and pay the taxes on it but no value to us. I did scrape it when I first got blade that would and did so till one day the county's road plow did the road, maybe two months later they did again. I called and asked and was told it is because of liability we must for we did scrape it years ago. (They had not for years when they began back.) I said liability? I was told if anyone wrecked due to anything related to the easement's condition they were liable so I was very glad they took it over. They just scraped it today.

But a question on private road, is there no owner to them? We have them here also but is there not a real owner for that land the road is on? Had never thought of that until reading this. But it is my understanding there is here and now what kind of liability the owner has have no idea and am sure it would vary from state to state.

As insurance agent if you are charging some for working on the work you are taking on a risk as a commercial business. Even if you have great relationships with everyone on the road you do not with all who visit them. Be a friend but know your full risks.

As others have said, if you begrudge doing the service, that should serve as a warning. I'm all about being a good neighbor, but it does sound like you are going beyond the call of duty.

I'm thankful to live among good neighbors. I've lived here for 20 years, and I'm by far the "newcomer" among my 3 contiguous neighbors! We ask each other for virtually nothing, but would likely jump to give if any has a need. I often mow and plow snow for one neighbor; not because he needs it necessarily, I just like him and happen to have equipment. I enjoy it. Plus, he's a lawyer and former judge - I need to bank some goodwill! :)
