How much does that log weigh?

People who burn green wood, and the resulting heavy smoke, are one the major reasons why wood stoves, OWB and wood heat are being outlawed around the country. it also puts the burner, and his family, at greater risk of a chimney fire due to the heavy creosote which is a direct result of burning wet wood.

Why burning green, wet and poorly seasoned wood is a fool's errand:

The above is true... Some may not like the message, but it's still the truth...

Moisture meters are not expensive most are reliable and accurate...burning too dry of wood is as foolish as burning too wet/green of wood...between 15% and 20% is what is recommended by most informed sources...

here some info on meters...:

Just make sure you test the wood in the center, not just ck. the outside and call it good enough...

I don't mean to be a downer, but I have to agree, don't burn green wood. I know so many people around here always scrambling for their wood, cutting, splitting, burning, all in the same day. If you want to know the problems that can bring you, ask my MIL, but wait you can't. Her house burnt down with her inside after the pipe clogged from burning green wood. It had all been thoroughly cleaned 2 months prior. I don't burn wood currently, but when I did I always had my wood shed stocked by May, then I didn't have to spend the winter worrying where next weeks heat would come from.

Back on topic though, good info, I've always wondered what some of the logs I've moved weighed. Most of mine where by hand though, so I always figured if I put my back out they were over 200lbs

I use a moisture meter, too, and prefer to burn wood as dry as I can...but enough about firewood...let's talk about that enormous buck!!
