Tractor Hydraulic Transmission Oil

In my limited experience/knowledge, I find that there are basically 2 types of oils for the tractor operator in today's market. One is for basic hydraulic/manual shift tranny/differential functions and the other, more complex/expensive oil is for hydrostats, wet brakes, and other amenities.

In assisting in deciding what to use, I look for 2 specs on the container feeling assured that if the fluid meets these specs it is good to go for everything I have: For the older Fords I have, '60 vintage with basic functions I look for JD J303 spec. For the new tractors I look for JD J20C. Usually if a supplier lists any specs, either of those will be on the container. Course If
Warren Oil is the packager they list the whole gauntlet of suppliers and it's easy to find what you are looking for.

I find the Premium grade functional oil at TSC or Attwoods Farm Store meet the J20C and Attwoods has the best price, both I understand are packaged by Warren. The J303 I get at most any supplier.

I went to the New Holland Dealer in Nashville Ga the other day. (2 hour drive one way) The guy sold me some Extreme brand hydraulic fluid. I noticed it was cheaper than their sister store quoted me and stopped to check the label after driving an hour and a half towards home. The label said "not recommended for tractors newer than 1996". Had a New Holland compatibility for 134B and C but not D. My TLB requires 134D. Went in Tractor supply and bought the Traveler premium brand and that label listed 134D compatibility on it.

I would say at minimum if you use generic to make sure it says on the label it is compatible with the specs listed in your tractor manual.

I'm stuck with $80 worth of fluid I won't use. Maybe I will be going back that way for something else but not going to make a 4 hour trip just to return it.

Like I said. I use the JD specs as they are usually on a container if anything. The 303 is what I use for my 134 requirements in my 1960's tractors. The JD 20C is for my new tractors with all the amenities that can have problems with the lack of additives in the 303 like brakes and hydrostats chattering and all.......so they tell me. My Branson tractor manuals post an oil company spec, but when the dust settles 20c covers the bases and I can find that.

On the guy selling you the wrong oil, I'd have a serious talk with the store owner/manager and ensure that the clerk is briefed. I'd insist that the store ate the bill and reimbursed you.....if not fire off a complaint to NH. These store clerks are paid to get the right parts for you the customer. Now if you failed to tell him something that he should have been told to get the right product then sir........................

Put the junk oil in your next log splitter build. Thirty years from now it will not matter. Mine was built in 82.

Well, I purchased the oil along with a cylinder rebuild kit for my NH575E so I'm thinking I should have been given oil for that use.

Well that should have been a flag for the clerk in my opinion.
