You'll be throwing your money away on a Garden Tractor and/or ATV. I bought my Yanmar 276D (27 engine hp), 4x4, loader for 6K. It's been basically bulletproof for 7 & 1/2 years.

silvertramp: thx for the idea. Looking at 2011 Yanmar SC2400's now. Going around $9k for 150 hrs, 4WD, mower and bucket. I could do that. Just need someone who knows what they're looking at to check the thing out. Is there a place on the site here for people who will do that?

Look for abuse. Abused bucket, abused cab area, leaks, hydraulic lines, is it smooth in all operations, look for roll-over evidence. @150 hours, it should be totally clean. Ask about services done, and what he used it for. Was it ran in very salty conditions?

I don't think you can go wrong with that tractor though. Yanmars are great rigs!

First impression of my Yanmar was not favorable. Faded red paint & dent in the hood, surface rust. Upon closer examination, no leaks, solid straight tins, low hours, USA model. 7 & 1/2 years later... same dent in the hood, (Somebody has to drop something out of the bucket onto the hood.) Same faded paint, same surface rust, same straight tins. I look for reasons to upgrade... can't justify it.

If the mountainous part is very steep, you maybe better off w/o the tractor being you're just maintaining trails. A tractor has a higher center of gravity & you could get into some bad situations being you've never been around power equipment.

An ATV with a heavier duty pull behind will handle the cutting issue you have described. I've been around all kinds of equipment my whole life & seen some terrible things from folks that had no idea what they're doing, have even scared myself a time or two by getting in a hurry & dropping my guard.

Oh yeh, i grew up doing a lot of labor being i didn't have the proper equipment, keeps you in better shape than having a machine doing most of it for you. Now that i have proper equipment for myself, good 'ol grunt work is still something i enjoy.

You may want to look into a Ventrac. They are made for hills and have some other cool tools on them. Ventrac.com

I agree on the ATV (4 wheeler) with pull behind. I spent years and lots of money in the search for the perfect mower for me. My needs are not as your's but in my quest I have looked at advantages and disadvantages of most devices designed for the clipping of vegetation and that history is that upon which I base my comment.

MF283,
Very good point on the center of gravity. Yes, this is the foothills of the Catskill Mtns in NY state. It's not the Rockies but it's more than hills out there. I keep thinking of all the ways the equipment could roll. In the area I see only ATV/UTVs used, except for the farms, where you'd expect to see tractors and more level lots.

FWIW, I've grown up around and, for a few years, worked in asphalt paving so I've been around heavy equipment my whole life. I just never had much time on the larger equipment and it was many years ago. I've seen unskilled guys blow engines, pull down utility lines, roll over into culverts, etc. I'm hoping to avoid that part ;).

I have both tractors (2) AND an RTV 900 for getting around on. I have to say that if I had to give up one or the other, it would have to be the tractors. Although I use my TLB a lot, really nothing that I do couldn't be done with a rental a couple times a year but I use the RTV 900 daily, it sure beats walking especially with my worn out legs. Of course when we first bought the property, a tractor with bushhog was a requirement to tame the property that had been neglected for many years. I just cant imagine getting around 28 acres without some sort of transport. I mow about 6 acres of yard with my zero turn mowers and most of it couldn't be mowed with a trail behind mower without doing a lot of trim work with a push mower / weedeater, but for what you describe, I think an ATV 4 wheeler or side by side type of vehicle would be very useful for you. I love the power dump bed on my RTV which is very useful for loading and unloading the many tons of rocks that I have removed. I have to say that a Kubota RTV may not be the right thing for very steep mountainous terrain and a motorcycle type 4 wheeler might be better but will be much less versatile. The problem with the side by side vehicles is the new cost which is above your current budget.
If you really have no use for a tractor with FEL at the moment, go with what you see being used locally and you wont go wrong.

Gary,
Thx for the reply. I wasn't aware of the RTV 900 but I like the looks of it. As you intimated, the center of gravity might be too high for mountainous terrain. I've got a push mower for tight spots and a family member just gave me a small john deere riding mower that was formerly used in a cemetery. So, I should be fine near the house. I'm leaning toward an ATV for rough mowing on steep hills and trail maintenance.
