What to look for buying old Farmall

Having a 3 point is certainly something to consider. Gives you lots more flexibility.

Old tractors are addicting so be prepared lol.

Yeah I'm not expecting a **** of a lot from this tractor, and I know it's no substitute for a modern unit. Eventually I'll get a 30-40 hp 4x4 HST with loader and backhoe. Not ready for that. I want a toy. I'm already addicted to old tractors and I haven't even bought one yet. It's probably totally the wrong thing to, and that's probably totally why I'm doing it. Know what I mean?

But an A will do some work and I can use it to grade 1/2 mile of gravel road and push some snow.

Seller with the leaky Super A responded, says it's leaking at the hyd. pump and one front wheel bearing, not engine or trans. Easy fix?

So- a Super A with front blade and rear Gannon, needs a little hydraulic repair and a front wheel bearing or two, $2400. Sound like a decent deal?

And, how does $1200 sound for hauling about 1000 miles?

$1200 is an absolute steal for "hauling about 1000 miles"!

Steal for you. That's only $1.20/mile which is very reasonable for hauling a tractor.

Is there really nothing closer? That seems like a lot to spend for shipping a tractor of that value. If you could go to a few auctions I suspect you could find something as nice for less $ and minimal shipping costs.

I bought a H, good tires with a front bucket and chains for $1,000. I spent a few hundred on parts and it runs like a top. Starts better than my diesel equipment in cold weather as well.

Always watch for good tires. They will cost as much as the tractor in some cases.

Thanks roadhunter. My original plan was to buy a cub which I could haul with a U-haul. I still may do that, and tractors are significantly less expensive where I'm buying. $1000 for a good running cub here in Calif. is rare, but there seem to be more of these older units for sale in states north of me. So $1000 for the tractor, $200 for a trailer, money for hotels etc and I'm still a bit ahead of the game for a good unit.

But the economics of it change if I get a Super A. I can't haul it with my Toyota Tacoma cause it's too heavy, so I got to pay a hauler. Yes $1200 to haul a $1500-2500 tractor is a lot. Maybe I should wait and look around. Haven't seen many similar units here in Calif, though. I want a cub or A, partly because I like their looks, but also because they have belly blades for grading. Haven't seen a belly blade on a 9N or other similar unit.

I should just get the cub and haul myself.

Very cool, I am fond of Cubs too as I have a 55 Cub that I bought to help with gardening. I got a set of cultivators,disc, 12" turning plow and spike harrow that came with it. I wanted to get a blade for it to push snow and some grading but never located one close enough. I say take some time to see if you can locate one closer to you. What you will spend in hauling would be more than enough to replace all the seals and give it a tune. Mine had 50 years of crud built up on it, anyway I cleaned it ,split it, replaced all leaking seals, sanded, primed and painted. Five years later the hydraulics failed so I pulled the pump over winter got a repair rebuild kit put it in, bingo all is good. Splitting was not as hard as I thought it would be and can be done. Most all the Cub carbs need rebuild kits put in and are not difficult. I am mechanically inclined but had never touched or worked on a tractor before but with the manual you can do everything.
