Retirement Question

   / Retirement Question #71
Dad really never drew much Social Security... he knew fighting Leukemia his days were numbered yet he kept working until he went into the hospital and passed away at 72...

What he did do was ensure mom would have 3 x more in social security because he kept working and waited to 70 to start. He's been gone 16 years..

You should be very proud of your father. He was dedicated to your mother, put her first and God will reward him for that.

I gave up working when I was 61. (now 67) I sometimes wish I had a little income for buying new tractors and things but we get by. My super paid the farm off and we installed Solar power so the only bills we get are Council Rates. We have our own water so no water bills.
We do not go out (too old for that) We have no desire to travel. I did that over the years before retiring. We have our farm and animals and everything is paid for. I have enough from my pension to keep my hobby well supplied. What more do you want?

We all were very lucky... February 14th is their anniversary... all the years they were married then NEVER went out on the 14th... Dad said it was for amateurs and he didn't want to share their anniversary with the crowds... they always celebrated the next week...

I guess if any of us had a crystal ball we would know exactly what to do...

One of my friends had planned so carefully for retirement... they even bought a home and had some changes made so it would be wheelchair accessible and have room should they need a caretaker... she passed the same year she started her Social Security and he the next...

A lot of my friends have been passing away... always had a lot of older ones even as a kid. Just about all had decent pensions and medical... either from working in the Utility Sector, Military or other Government employment with a few retiring from large Union Manufacturing...

Sounds wonderful to have what you want and to be able to enjoy it...

I've never visited that part of the world... do have several friends that were transferred there for a year or two... all throughly enjoyed their time and have returned several times to reconnect with friends they had made...

Well, I can't say that anyone really needs much more than that. I am a minimalist as well, but my wife is not. As long as there are two threads holding my skivvies onto the elastic band, that is good enough. At one thread, they are rags, whether they need to be or not. :D A number of years until retirement, but we will see where it takes us.

Thanks ultrarunner and I should have said.... "and to top it all off, we live in one of the best countries in the world and in sunny Queensland."

My brother lived down there for a few years and has great things to say about it. You are fortunate. If you can take and post some pictures, we would appreciate it.

Guess I am lucky that way. My wife only wants a new kitchen. (working on it) She loves her animals. Doesn't ask for much at all.
