Retirement Question

   / Retirement Question #111
One of the other things we did was downsize from a big house, 3500 sq ft to a 1200 sq ft home. We also moved from NJ to PA, this reduced our property taxes from $13k a year to $3k, not to mention our kids are now 35 min away instead of 90min. Also in PA your pension is not taxed along with SS. we are spending the winter in FL , being a snowbird is a wonderful thing.

I'm retired in North Jersey and looking to relocate to PA for the reasons you mentioned. I was thinking north and east or west of Harrisburg (we have family in Dillsburg). I was wondering if you'd have any suggestions? I'm looking to get 15-25 acres, mix of field and woods for elbow room and hobby farming.

Thanks

i'm 55 and retirement is long off for me. I'm an engineer working from home, 16 years. Pay is great, global travel often with my wife. Happy to keep this gig going as long as it's fun. I plan to let the S.S. build by 8% each year after my 67 time. My wife can draw on hers at 62 and then switch to half of mine when I begin to draw. All the while I'll keep adding to my 401k and taking advantage of my companies 7.5 % matching.

   / Retirement Question #113
I am healthy and never frequent a Dr's office, is the cost that high? Should I set aside money for insurance cost?

Reason for this specific question; 'I plan on retiring at 57'. Certainly I could make it without significant health issue until the age of 65 - Fingers crossed! Maybe I am under thinking it.

Hey, you sound just like me!!!!!!! When I was 57. When I was 57 and 1 month while jogging with the weekly group (and I was one of the fastest) I had a slow time recovering after a hill, Three hours later surgery to stop a heart attack. Would have been better if it was 2 hours. Fingers crossed really does not help, whole food plant based diet without added oils helps a lot more. Check out the movie Forks over Knives and get good insurance. $70,000.00 for 1 stent strategically placed.

In laws are in the area, Mechanicsburg, west of Harrisburg , this area is growing so you may not find what you want. But try looking in Perry County about 1 hour away, in laws have a cabin and the area is very rural. Also between Mechanicsburg and Carlisle is a nice area a lot of farms.

Good luck, and enjoy retirement, a wonderful thing.....work is so overrated...LOL.

People are always asking me "How's retirement" I started saying it's bad, I'm bored, fighting with the wife, need cash ... and they say "Really?!"

And I say NO, it's great!

I retired in 2003 after almost 38 years... You know when you are ready..... when no amount of money they could pay you would make you stay working.... Not that you don't like the people or the work... just ready... I stay busy working on stuff I actually want to work on. :)

PS: It is not that you have enough money, you can probably never have too much. It's just that feeling you get that it is time to move on with your life..... Hard to 'splain... but you will know it when you feel it.

Heart disease runs throughout some families and it's not necessarily the genes but the passed down recipes. I know you are just kidding about the bacon grease but in keeping in touch with the Cardiac Rehabilitation center of the hospital out here, their business has double along with their staff since I have been there. People refuse to change their life significantly even after their third visit in CR. (A lot are not yet retired.)

So the lesson to learn is - when you retire to be ready to make changes in you life as they become necessary. Even though it's best to have insurance or the income to do it, you also need the time to do the research which is what you have more of when you retire.

As long as everything is paid for. house several dependable cars and toys and your income level for 2 around 36000 you pay no tax ( run this past a cpa) you can see how retirement is possible. Add up your take home pay for a year and try to match close to that. talk to a well known medical insurance company such as humana or anthaem and they will give an estimate. your cpa or your state gov. will give you a idea of affordable care act subsidy. have some savings or reaistate to fall back on.
