Hi Folks,
New to forum. Hope somebody can help. My business is Kitchen remodels. I just got hit with a little issue to deal with in an old farmhouse. I took down a rock ceiling for the purpose of re-doing the kitchen with new cabinetry.
I just discovered there is a steel beam going across the room. It is serving no purpose what so ever. I checked that it is supporting nothing above or below. Homeowner confirms also.
So, I need to take it out to proceed with build-out. However I do that, I need to know how much it weighs. I the specification's of the beam but do not know how one calculates the weight from those numbers.

Beam height is 6&1/8"
Flange width is 6"
Steel thickness is 1/4"
Web height is 5&13/16"
Beam length is 12'
Cannot measure web thickness

Please help.... Desperate.

Thank you.

From that description, you are dealing with a 6X6 'H' beam. That beam should weigh about 15#/ft so a 12 foot long beam should be just under 200#. Here's some numbers to check for reference.

By the dimensions you list, it appears to be a W6x15 beam. 15 meaning the weight per foot.

So...15x12 is 180#.

Worst case is 25# per foot, as that is the heaviest common 6x6 beam, but the flanges would be near 1/2" thick

Or leave it there and remodel the kitchen into a shop.

Roll a scaffold under it or a good step ladder at each end then release one end at a time wand set it down on the ladders/scaffold. Then you can decide what to do from there. I vote kicking one ladder over!

Just curious... if it does not support anything, then why do you think it was put in ???
Cannot imagine putting something like that in without a good reason....

That's exactly what was puzzling me to begin with. Apparently, it was a milk room, back in the day. The original farmhouse was a dairy farm. From talking with the old man 90 yrs old. He said his wife had the extension built over the well underneath. This all occurred before he married the wife. Been like this for about 80 years. So, we can only conclude it was there from the original structure of the old house or they put it in with a potential of building another story above at some point down the road. Above it is a sloping roof not connected to the beam.
