I remember watching a show where trains were plowing in the Canadian Rockies...... when the (large) I-beam brace on the plow started to seriously bend trying to punch through a Pass, they knew it was time to get the blower-locomotive out.

Rotary plows are often used when snow on the sides doesn't allow room for the wedge plow to move snow to. And they are much slower.
