3 lb engineers hammer. Or a 4 lb sledge. Lay it on the ground at the stump while cutting. Easy to pick up when you need to drive a wedge and you can leave it if something goes wrong.

I use a campers axe which is just a short handled axe. Hangs in a hammer holder on my belt.

what do you guys carry around for pounding in wedges? we used an axe this winter but it's easy to lose. I usually ended up cutting a piece of wood when i needed to hit them. I was thinking a 4lbs maul on my belt but it could be awkward in the woods.

I usually keep a small hatchet on my belt when felling. It works OK to knock a wedge in preemptively. But if I need to pound wedges in to correct a problem, I grab an axe (usually have one nearby). On a really large tree that might need 3-4 wedges, I have to put all my weight into the swing. The hatchet just wouldn't have enough beef.

Large hatchet or mini-axe. i have it anyway for taking off the small branches one the tree is down.

I have used a hatchet as a wedge as I sometimes carry a small one along with the mini-axe. The only problem is that they are steel and can be hard on a chain.

We always cut in February, so I'd like to use something i can keep on my belt. Things tend to disappear when you sit them in 3 feet of snow. like chokers.. We put orange ribbon on a branch near where we think we lost it so we can search once the snow melts. There's usually a lot of ribbon.

I just beat them in with my chainsaw... Heck, it's already the same color as my wedges anyway!

I use a HF 2# drilling hammer with a bright yellow fiberglass handle, which fits well in a hammer loop, and because of its really short handle, it doesn't hang down much and get in my way when walking.

I also drilled a hole in the end of the handle to put a short loop of brightly colored paracord on it, which not only makes it easier to avoid dropping it into the snow in the first place, but also makes it easier to see if I do drop it (carefully set it down) when I calmly follow my planned route of egress (run like heck) to avoid misfalls.

I tried to find a link to the ones I have (I have 3 or 4 of them depending on whether I remember where I put them all) at HF, but they only seem to have the wooden handled ones.

2-1/2 lb. Drilling Hammer with Hardwood Handle

Not as colorful, but still cheap and solid.

Another would be hard-head plastic wedges (a steel layer at the head to better handle impact).

I have one of those steel-backed plastic wedges (photo). I can take full swings at it with my axe, and it
holds up well. I have the plain plastic ones, too. All from Baileys, the place for chainsaw fanatics.

Nice pix of the plastic wedge victims.

Wow, Bailey's is a pretty awesome site. Too bad the exchange rate is so terrible for us Canadians right now.
