That was quite a deluge. My rain gage topped out at 6 in., but looking at nws pages, this area received between 10 & 14 in. yesterday. The local rivers are all above flood stage - - some have crested, but others are still rising. My property is not likely to flood & I don't have flood insurance since my elevation is OK. The highway leading to my road washed out in several places - - the one pictured is about 400 ft. from my road. And, there is another washout about a half mile the other direction. So, for now we are barricaded in. We're OK for a couple of days as long as we have power. Don't think I can get to church tomorrow though.

Was the culvert perhaps stopped up with debris? or it just washed so hard it could not keep up?

This is the worst it's ever been here in Central Louisiana. There is over 7' of water running from the nearby river in the front yard of my parents. Luckily I built in a high spot but I still can't out. This is a photo of the creek that runs underneath the state highway and through our property. The railings are 5' tall and no longer visible.View attachment 460616

7.5 inches at my place in East TX. Friends half an hour away had over 9 inches, and another friend in Monroe LA had 14 inches. Worse was on the second day when it hit so hard for so long. Then the rest of it just added to the mess. My place is fine, just high water on the creek. Probably 4 feet over the banks that went down fairly quickly. I have friends who have some damage, and there are a lot of roads in the area that where washed out. No matter how big the culvert is, it can't handle five days of rain!!! I think the county figures it cheaper to put the culvert back in place, build it up and pave over it after it washes out then to build a proper bridge. It makes sense dollar wise, but this is the second time this year that I know for sure the only road to a friends farm washed out. The county put a big I beam down for them to walk across.
