The only place I see surge brakes are at the rental yards... so it would seem the electrical connection is more important than ever.

I lost trailer brakes with 11,000 pounds behind a F-350. Lucky on flat ground. Had it been on a mountain I probably could have stopped it, but the truck brakes wouldn't have been happy.

I lost a box trailer on the freeway... the 1 7/8 ball broke and the trailer tongue hit the concrete surface which was poured in sections... each section had a lip... the tongue hit a lip and it collapse ripping the the tongue with safety chains from the trailer...
Thankfully, no one was hurt as my unattached box trailers bounced around in circles coming to a stop in the middle lane... I had been traveling in the slow lane under 55 mph.
If anyone ever asks what I am grateful for this always makes the list!
Sometimes the unexpected happens...
By the way... the ball shank was still attached to my drawbar... it was the ball top that separated... crazy... no more 1 7/8 or 1 3/4 balls which another really old trailer had.

No brake lights means no brake lights.
Might mean no brakes.
Just like presence of lights doesn't mean there ARE brakes.
Neither are a guaranteed predictor of the other.

This is why you may wish to watch the behavior of others while on the road. For an example, you would not want to pull in front of someone who's brakes are in question at the next stop light.
Anyway, is there any updated info on the situation that started this thread?
Correct. On a pickup type trailer there is a yellow wire for the left light, a green wire for the right light and a blue wire for the electric brakes. The yellow and green wires control the turn signal and brake lights and have nothing to do with the electric brakes.

So when the bulbs blow on my lights it also kills the brakes? They are on separate wiring, so lots of possibilities to make this statement false. My lawnmower trailer has no brakes, but the lights work.
I think he meant if there were no brake lights then the brake pedal wasn't being pressed thereby no brakes. But that doesn't mean the lights were functional or connected properly. There's really no way to know.

Back in the 80's My dad had a Ford F600 truck for sale. A guy shows up with a new 3/4 ton Ford pickup pulling a trailer made out of a mobile home frame hooked to the bumper.
He decides he wants the truck, pays for it & is going to haul it home on the trailer. My dad tells him he doesn't think that's a good idea.
He starts telling my dad how great his truck is & how it will pretty much pull anything. The guy is set on hauling so Dad stops trying to talk him out of it.
He starts to load it on the trailer & when he gets on the back of the trailer the rear wheels of the pickup come off the ground. The guy guns it & runs up on the trailer as he gets to the front of the trailer the bumper of the pickup breaks completely off & the the F600 goes off the front of the trailer & slams into the back of the pickup.
The guy gets out shaking all over & says guess I will have to come back & get it later, gets in the pickup and drives away. He came back about a week later & had someone drive the truck home.
