Contractor in the area is hauling a large track hoe on a triple axle that has duals with an F350. He is not the type to ease from site to site, seems like every where he goes he has to get there as fast as he can. Accident waiting to happen I think.

The problem is, the govt seemingly can't scale a response. If presented with a pebble as a problem, it reaches for a backhoe, not a broom.

Let the govt handle this and we will all need semi trucks to haul a bag of mulch home...
So if they say really, really, REALLY don't tow over weight then people will listen?

The govt cares about 2 things-money and power.

They don't care what you do as long as you paid for the classes and permits to do it.

It's amazing how people think a 350 dually is capable of towing almost anything but compared to a class 4 or 5 truck it's way less.

Around here, the DOT just does revenue enforcement.

a guy hauling a overflowing trailer of tree debris with no lamps and a dragging tag, with too much tounge weight will fly by the troopers, and then an empty mini dump with mud splashed on it's tag will go by, and they will ground him for an inspection on the roadside.

I was taking my wife to the doctor today when I stopped before entering a four lane open access road, ie; 55mph limit. Noticed a Dodge dually pulling a tandem dually trailer with a 12 maybe 18k excavator on it. When traffic had to stop for a red light, I noticed two things. The rig had no brake lights and slowed deliberatly earlier than I would have with a proper set up rig.

We happened to be along side the truck at the light only momentarily and I did not think to get a photo. We could plainly see his gooseneck wire plug in total disarray and one safety chain hanging on the top of the frame by the hitch post. I wish I had looked closer at how well the excavator was strapped down.

To this persons credit, he hung back at the next couple of lights. But the chains not hooked? Scary, I see this way to much around me.

I don't know about the legal stuff. But it doesn't take multiple failures for this scenario to play out. Any one failure, if you've got 35,000 pounds pushing you down a hill at highway speeds, will soon lead to the other failures. You try stopping that with JUST your pick-up truck brakes, and they are going to work for about fifteen seconds, and whatever speed you did manage to shed will start building up again.

100% my point.

Sounds to me just too heavy and too fast for conditions.
steep grades loaded heavy will fade the brakes in no time then your just along for the ride.

What amazes me is when I get harassed on this forum for telling someone to stay WITHIN their listed tow ratings, and then am told manufacturers ratings are bunk. They always come back to 18 wheelers pulling 80K gross. I have had to stop my 5th wheel (12K) without trailer brakes, and that is not fun, but my truck does it. It wasn't on purpose or by choice either.

I cannot fathom someone pulling that much by choice. Sadly, it's the other driver that pays for someone else's stupidity.
