I bought a 10' roll of this flat chain from John Deere for my 494A planter. I have the length that I need measured. Now, how do I open a link to remove unwanted chain and then re-bend it to create the loop?

Is this just a lry job? Do they have a connector link that allows for easy connection? My guess would be that you sacrifice a link and replace with one similar to a roller chain master link.

With the chain laying on it's side like in your picture, and bent at the right angle, you can drive the links apart. The looped end of the link has an open slot. Align the other link end with that open loop and smack it with a hammer, driving them apart. Put it back together by reversing this situation. No cutting required.

They make half links for this chain to get the length closer to right. Then the finally tension is set with an adjuster. Usually a wooden block on the "slack" side of the sprockets.

This type of chain does not require a separate connector link.
To shorten or add to observe the chain closely and you will see one side of each link has an open side. Simply hold two adjent links at 90 degrees to one another and tap one link away from it's neighbor.

That being stated, there are times when one's patients can wear thin exercising this procedure. Sometimes a little shot of WD-40 or "Blaster" helps

If you'd get one of the tools similar to the photo it makes detachable chain connecting/separating a lot easier.

If you are going to do a bunch of chain then get the tool but for one chain just take it easy and don't bend it. You could make a tool out of a piece of oak if you want. Ed

Thank you to all responders. I got it separated.... Now, to get it back together!!! I have to re-attach the chain while in the sprockets.... So, it'll be a tight fit for the hammer but I'll get it done!

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the clamp idea. It worked great. I bought a small vice from Northern Tool for $30.

However, I guess the chain type is wrong. It was for the earlier version of this planter! Lol.

So, after all of that, I ordered the RIGHT chain. =) The good part is that I bought it new, old-stock off of ebay for $18! What a deal!

Glad it worked. Beats a field rock and 12 inch crescent.
