Fill some empty pill containers with talcum powder or glucosamine capsules if you don't have the sisu to solve the problem and just want to move it elsewhere. In my experience, they target homes who regularly get such drugs. They know the schedules and timing of deliveries. Don't rule out the mail "person(s)" either. A State Police task force solved our problem. A person in the local sub was reselling them on Craigslist. Their customers were not happy with the quality of the goods.

That was happening around here , looking for drugs . One of my neighbors got hit , but the husband thought it was funny , they got his wifes estrogen . Some druggie will grow himself a rack , difficult to explain

And as with so many crimes these days there just isn't much officials (police or postal inspectors) can do. It isn't organized crime, catching one thief, or hundreds, just doesn't have much impact. There will be more tomorrow.

When I was in high school there were some kids that rode around on weekends partying and they started throwing cinder blocks a mailboxes from the back of their truck. It got to be a regular event. My mom worked at the post office and knew what was going on with the postal inspectors. They never made an arrest because the boys quit but they were close to it. If you have contacted the postal service I would bet they are working on it more than you think. Ed

Up here, the postal inspectors do not drive around in fancy cars with all sorts of red and blue carnival lights on, nor do they have fancy uniforms. They just look like every day, run of the mill people with white collar jobs. No Armani suits either.
Had a thief steal a small package out of our box with a vacuum cleaner part. Happened between delivery at about 1130 and our checking box at about 1500, so broad daylight. I'm sure they thought it was drugs or something else valuable. And I hope they were very, very disappointed. The package probably is in the weeds somewhere within 1/2 mile or so of the box. Postmaster says it has been happening a lot lately.

Druggies, especially young ones will down anything hoping to geet high. We had a jail inmate on commnity service helping clean out an old cold war bomb shelter, found some pills appareantly for some sort of anti radiation caused problems, downed enough to kill him.
As for the theft of mail, I saw recently where one could get lockable rural mailboxes. Stupid of me but I didn't keep the link. The thief(s) would probably just bash it open anyhow.
I just tried google. put in: locking rural mailboxes. Lots of hits, prices $100-125 range. Apparantly outgoing mail is not secure, incoming lands in lockbox.

Local mail boxes where getting raided a few months ago. The thugs seemed to be after checks though I do have to wonder if they were after drugs as well. They did get caught after a couple of months.
We don't leave out going mail in our mail box but take mail to the drop off box at the post office. Our mail box is in a group with other mailboxes so it would make a tempting target but the mailboxes are in the open and can be seen by several houses which seems to minimize our risk. There are plenty of mailboxes grouped together that cannot be see from houses that are easier targets. Having said that, we still drop off mail at the post office and we try to pick up the mail as soon as it is delivered.
