I like the idea of getting a 20' steel shipping container for long term unattended storage. I suspect a solid lock would make one of those a vault
Would storing a tractor with its onboard diesel fuel in a hot container for a month at a time be a problem? I've stepped into one of those and found it to be an oven during even our summer months. I would think taking the battery and keeping it near on a trickle charger would be a useful for battery life and a bit more security.
That works fine.
I've had a 40' for about 7 years on my remote property and have stored an 8n tractor filled with gas and two four wheelers and gas cans all full through GA summers with temps inside the container probably reaching 140+ on the sunny side of the wall. Probably dangerous but it's worked all these years and no issues yet even with an electric golf car and battery chargers running. The container is wired up to electric service as well. I don't leave lights on inside, though, but I do turn on the lights when I arrive sometimes after weeks or months at a time.
Gas fumes tend to sink meaning anything not gas proof should be elevated including electrical stuff, just like in a garage. My snake boots have melted soles and degraded interior from just that. I learned my lesson.
My new Kioti tractor should fit but for now I have to find a place for my 8n and the bushhog and box blade and all the other junk. Those containers are 9ft high so it should fit easily.
I just use a shoulder jacketed armored padlock that can be cut but like the other posters said you will run out of 18v grinder battery before you cut through that much steel and if you cut the handles for the door releases you wouldn't be able to open the doors anyways.
Nobody can stop a pro thief. A rollback will easily pull a 6000 lb tractor up the back with it's probably 12k+ winch. Even with wheels turned a sheet of plywood would make a great sled for turned wheels. The rollback is what delivered the container to the property in fact. They are purpose built for doing what we are talking about - stealing equipment.
But you are not protecting against them. You're fighting the meth heads and the **** kids that think they should play with your equipment like we all did when we were kids. And usually, a heavy chain will protect just about anything but parts thieves will dismantle whatever they want. Hex chain is near impossible to cut with any cutter besides cutoff wheels because of the flat sides making the psi required exponentially higher.
So, the containers are the best. I live near the ports so containers are 1000 bucks and delivery is maybe 200 if that. I might buy another one since they are perfect garages, sheds, etc. They have heavy thick wooden floors are actually are vented but barely. Those vent holes make good wasp nests. Mine's painted forest green so it doesn't stick out. You could easily camo it and you wouldn't see it from 100 yards away if you didn't know it was there.
