I was thinking about building a 3 point dump box with a hydraulic cylinder for the dump function. Figured I would ask here if anyone has built one - no sense in reinventing the wheel. Primary use will be hauling in blocked firewood from the woods.

I am currently looking into building a 3 point carry all. I am planning on using the hydraulic center link to dump it.

Yes I did, it's my weight box and for hauling stuff. I just put gravel in it for a weight box then dump it when done. I did a single lever to unlatch after these pictures were added.

Hyd toplink is probably your best bet for dumping. Set your brackets that the cyl is fully retracted when the box is level to get the most amount of tilt when dumping.

Leejohn, nice work. I especially like the slots for the hinge bolts. I may have to borrow that idea for my 6x10 hyd dump wagon.

I built this 10 years ago. Not a dump box, but rather a dump carryall. Bed is 3' X 6'. I built it to haul a little of everything, but wouldn't be that hard to put sides on.

I have the same set up on my dump trailers. If you do it like that, when dumping just don't back up after it's about 1/2 up only move fwd slow until empty. It well push the tail gate up and of the slots, if it doesn't come all the way off then the tail gate can't close and it bends the brackets. It's no big deal but I have done it 2 times and the 1st trailer was made in 2003.

I like this design. Looks like a person could get far greater tilt/dump angle than a hydraulic top link. Any more close up pics of your design? Thank you.

That does bring up a good question. How much tilt is needed?

I've got one of those three point reversible tripping scoop buckets that will roll over upside down (a pain when it does)
It's used for carrying cut wood out of the woods, and moving rocks, soil, stone etc. There is never a problem dumping any load, 4 foot wood slides clear as I drive away.

Then I've got a tipping garden trailer that barely tilts 20 degrees unless it's over a bank. (which it often is)

The trailer needs help to discharge a load. The scoop bucket will clear set up concrete ;-)

I would say that somewhere around 35 degrees of tilt is enough for anything but wet clay.

I bet there are other considerations and opinions on the details. ;-)

Leejohn,
That looks fantastic. What did you use for the floor and sides?

I forgot, I well check tomorrow.

I know that feeling. I'm patient sitting with my 90 year old mother tonight. There are things down here that I think I built but, I can't remember doing it? There are things at my house that I'm positive I welded up and I can't even figure out what they're for.

That's all the pics I have of it. I basically copied a bale carrier frame I have, then added a cross member for the cylinder to attach to, and a couple braces to tie it in to the cross member ahead of that to push against. The pivot pin is 1", and ran though a piece of pipe to tie the back of the frame together, and leave short stub pins to pivot on, to keep them from bending.

Sub frame is made out of the same 1-1/2" X 3" tubing, with 2" C-channel cross members. As far as cylinder attaching point to the platform, I measured the dump bed on my one ton dump truck, and scaled it down 1/3. Deck is like 1/16" sheet steel.

I have since added a hydraulic top link, so if needed, a person can raise the 3 pt., let the top link out, and platform be at a full 90コ angle to the ground.

I used a 2" cylinder, and will dump anything I've put on it so far. I used it for weight on my M-F 180, for when I rolled the pad for the new buildings. Backed my dump truck up to it, and dumped bank run gravel on, and what stayed on was the weight. Guessing 1000 to 1200 lbs. Stayed on there for approx. 2 months, and when I was done, the 180 dumped it at an idle.

I've used it for a multitude of things from mucking stalls, to gathering rocks/dead limbs out of the pasture/hay field, spotting dirt, or stone. Pretty handy to just back up to a wash to dump the rocks, or burn pile for the brush.

Here is some damp clay in the garden trailer. Just over 90 degrees worked well. :D

It's 14ga metal. Here is a picture of the tail gate latch and 3pt hookup.. That was put on right after the pictures from 2009 when I made it. 2 or 3 of the neighbors seen it and just had to have one, so I made them one as a good well thing.

I am using many of your ideas in my own carryall/ballast box idea. Mine is intended to offset the weight of a very large 4n1 so I need the weight all the time that I have the bucket on and so I'm making my floor out of 600 lb of concrete and the box itself is a bit bigger than yours is and should weigh about 200 lbs. I carry my backhoe now as ballast and the carryall will be much handier.

Thanks for sharing this.
