I need an AR-15

I don't have any trouble recognizing the AR as a legitimate firearm, I just don't understand why any self respecting hunter would use a weapon optimized for rapid fire close quarters combat rather than precise marksmanship. Davy Crockett hunted the same prey we do today and managed perfectly well with a single shot. Seems to me that would be more challenging and make the kill more meaningful both as a hunter and sportsman.

Gee, how did you meet Davy Crockett? I'm sure he'd of threw that 15 pound musket loader down for an AR if he had a choice. Would have come in handy at the Alamo as well.

It's not what you shoot, design, function, it's how you use it. At one time the bolt and lever were considered rapid fire high capacity rifles. When I was young, one of the most popular deer rifles was the Remington 742 and the old timers looked down on them as anything other than a bolt wasn't a real gun. My uncle wouldn't use anything other than a single shot. A friend only hunted with a muzzle-loader.

I don't guess I'll ever understand what someone else uses. How far back down the evolutionary scale do we go to satisfy the purists, flintlock, matchlock, long bow, atlatl...?

Of course many don't even understand why anyone would want to hunt.

Davy crockett used a horse, and probably a mule , and wagon. Why do you use a tractor , or anything else ?? Because you want it !

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would want an ugly black gun that really serves no sporting purpose. I own and shoot toms of firearms and not one black ugly gunn

This is the same thought process that drives the anti-gunners. "I can't understand why anyone would want ... ". They don't understand the desire or enjoyment derived from guns, and therefore conclude there isn't any positive aspects. And therefore we don't "need" guns, except for violent purposes.

Let's just agree amongst ourselves that there is a diversity of guns and applications and we should all be free to enjoy our own choice. Without someone acting superior in his/her choice and getting all snarky about it.

1) I met Davy Crockett at the movies when I was a kid. Cool dude. Great hat.
2) I suppose in the near future you guys will be justifying hunting with laser weapons too but I rather like the image of a hunter getting just one fair shot at prey. Honestly I prefer bow hunting (and permit it on my property) but I do recognize that firearms are here to stay.
3) No doubt a weapon designed for combat would be more useful at the Alamo. But, we're discussing hunting so unless laser weapons and drone scouts are also to become routine weapons in sport hunting, I still think it is reasonable to debate the need for assault rifles outside the shooting range. I do understand James' point that one can fire just one bullet but rather doubt that is what happens when an AR 15 is involved. I do understand it must be fun to rattle off multiple rounds but why not keep that thrill for the target range and keep hunting from just becoming an arms race. The prey haven't changed, why do hunters need the latest and greatest technology rather than just their skill and wits?

I don't know a lot of people who actually hunt with a AR but should be able too if they want.

How precise is your hunting rifle?
This is one of my AR platforms typical 100m groups.

Yote at 284m. This rifle shot the group above.

Daughter and her deer hunting rig.

At the end of the day it goes bang just like any other rifle. There's no voodoo, black magic or underlying evil in the gun.

Skill and wits? Thought you said you use a bow? How about camo, is that allowed? Aluminum tree stands or do you climb a tree and sit on a branch?
