I need an AR-15

   / I need an AR-15 #121
I need advice on an AR-15. I want a reliable, no frills, iron sight AR-15. Nothing fancy and no expensive addons.

Any brands, suggestions?

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would want an ugly black gun that really serves no sporting purpose. I own and shoot toms of firearms and not one black ugly gunn

Eddie, you're a Marine; 600m iron battle sights for a Marine is easy peasy :D

I'm not a fan of open sights for the very reason I can't see clearly out very far when using them. I never tried the red dot stuff, so I don't know if I would like it or not.

Many people simply enjoy shooting them, I don't understand why some people want shoot black powder, bows, golf, go to the beach, deep sea dive etc., but they do.

In my family, my youngest son served in two branches of the military, SWAT and it is the platform he's most proficient and his deer gun is a Rock River AR platform in 6.8SPC.

While I now use only bolt guns, I use to enjoy shooting my Colt HBAR with my sons who prefer them. I've still got it and some day one of my grandkids will be glad I kept it.

Sporting purposes? AR's make great hunting rifles. You need to open your horizons a little :D I don't hunt with an AR, but am considering it.

- 20" bull barrel in 223, or 204Ruger makes a nice varmint
- 16" or 18" in 6.8SPC makes a great deer rifle. So does 300blackout
- 16" barrel in 458socom or 50 beowolf will take pig, deer, elk, moose...

The AR platform is as available in a myriad of calibers now, not just 223/556. There are great target cartridges, small game cartridges, large game cartridges. 458socom is very close to a factory 45/70.

People who can't shoot straight need a large magazine and rapid fire to hose down their prey. I'm thinking neither Davy Crockett nor Annie Oakley would choose volume over precision.

In my state, ammo capacity is the same for bolt, lever, semi auto.

They do serve a sporting purpose...target practice, plinking...all fun.
An AR-15 also has very light recoil, so easy to shoot.

In my case and, IMHO, millions of others, the rifle is also a great home defense firearm. In parts of rural PA, thugs (junkies mostly, I suppose) were breaking in homes at night...two or three of them at a time...and trust me, if that happens, you won't be thinking "****, I have to much ammunition"
