What do you pay for Gravel??

The delivery is always the expensive part. Most trucks arrive underloaded. Not sure why, but this has always been the case. Now I have a "friend" who makes sure I get good loads. It really makes a difference. Another friend put me onto that. Climbing up onto the truck to take a look, BEFORE it's dumped. Wet material is another concern. There just seem like enough ways to pay more for gravel!

Part of that here is if the pit sends a truck out overloaded they get fined as well as the trucker. Most newer wheel loaders have built in scales on their machines and know how much they are putting on you and what your plates will allow. Not sure how that works up in CA.

I

Given than fuel prices have dropped I would expect the delivery costs would have gone down
Dan

You would think so, but does it ever?

In reality fuel isn't as much of cost as we think, when you do the math.

When I use to have it hauled.. the driver would give me the ticket from the quarry showing the tons he was charged for.. I paid that +his haul fee..
I have a dump trailer now , I haul my own... I can haul between 6-7 tons ..I paid $12.30 per ton at the quarry + tax,for what they call road base, crush ,and run I believe is what they call it..Just found a invoice list it 3/4 '' base

Friends can stretch the loads a bit I guess. Chances of them getting caught when they only have to go a few mile on back roads is almost zero. I think, they just don't like to weigh down their rigs, or maybe make work for themselves by making more trips.

The kicker for me is. I have a substantial dump trailer and large frame tractor. And a pit lets say five miles away, where I can get gravel at a very reasonable price on account of a back and forth working relationship. Yet, looking at the numbers, it's not worth it, factoring in time, tractor hours and Fuel. Plus safety issues, being on the road with such a load behind you.

ALL the quarries here were bought out by Aggregates USA, and they have a monopoly.

It's odd that I can have stone hauled from close to 40 miles away cheaper than the one 6 miles away. Guess which one is Aggregates USA.

Just had 48 tons delivered last week for around 1200 dollars. That was for 2B limestone or aashto #57's depending if you know the penndot terms or not. It's a clean stone I believe 1.5" and under.
