What do you pay for Gravel??

/ What do you pay for Gravel?? #21
Quote last week for 14 tons delivered for 500$ ended up buying a ton bulk at local hardware store and hauling on my flat deck for 47$. It's absolutely extortionate around here to do my 1/2 mile long drive would cost me my life's savings.

The delivery is always the expensive part. Most trucks arrive underloaded. Not sure why, but this has always been the case. Now I have a "friend" who makes sure I get good loads. It really makes a difference. Another friend put me onto that. Climbing up onto the truck to take a look, BEFORE it's dumped. Wet material is another concern. There just seem like enough ways to pay more for gravel!

That is why I use the guy I use. If I let the quarry haul me a tandem load, I get 15-16ton.

If I let the retired guy with his truck haul it, I get 19-20ton....and he charges me a flat $100, where the quarry truck runs about 150.

It's odd that I can have stone hauled from close to 40 miles away cheaper than the one 6 miles away. Guess which one is Aggregates USA.

Ahahahaa....I guess they HAVE to compete up your way ! .......or the 6 mile folks are really high.....

You would think so, but does it ever?

In reality fuel isn't as much of cost as we think, when you do the math.

I will find out when I get gravel delivered. The guy who delivered our last loads of gravel, helped build our house and is an honest guy. He said he had to raise his prices because of the increased cost in fuel. I believe him. I noticed he shut down the truck whenever the truck was not working. Something he did NOT do in the past. This was back when fuel was over $4 a gallon.

Later,
Dan

$110 for 7 tons of what we call 0 to 3/4 . It is limestone sized from 0 (dust) to 3/4 of an inch. Some call it 3/4 down. The quarry is only a few miles away.

I think I paid $245 for a 14 yard tandem axle dump truck load of 3/4" crushed limestone, cant recall the tonnage but the load does vary a little each way depending on how much is loaded. The local guy has a flat rate for hauling and he charges the amount the quarry charges him plus his hauling fee. The hauling fee is the same regardless of how much is on the truck.

3/4 Aggregate Base mostly...

I'm gong to have to stop reading this thread... seems nowhere is rock as expensive as in the SF Bay Area and I have to self haul.
