Stop thinger on a YM2202

I have an old YM2202. I am trying to get it to crank, I am not a mechanic, I am not much of a tinkerer. There is a push/pull cable? at the bottom of the dash, it says STOP. When I am trying to crank the tractor should this be pushed-in or pulled-out? AND what exactly does this thing do? Shuts off the fuel? Releases the compression?

Push in to start, pull to stop. It shuts off the fuel to stop the engine.

You also have a compression release push/pull cable on the left hand side as you see in this picture. It should be pulled as you begin to crank the engine over and then pushed in after a few fast revolutions of the engine. Yanmar YM 222D | Tractor.BG

So which lever are you referring to? yoiu can bet Yanmar did not put "stop" on yuor gray market tractor, but a lot of guys mistakenly use the decomp lever to stop, That can ruin your engine.

He has an aftermarket Tractor Supply cable installed. It is red with a "stop" written on it.

OK, I pushed it in and the tractor is now sitting outside idling while I came in here to say thank you. I would have pulled the STOP thinger to crank and would have run the battery down.
Also, I have a hole for the T-Handle for the Pressure Release, but just a hole, no T-Handle, should this concern me?

Can you post a picture of the engine (top area)? It sounds like the metal rod is missing. Its not that crucial to have the decompression unless you operate your tractor in sub freezing conditions. I always start mine up without the use of it.

Probably not if you have a good battery and good starter and unless you have pretty cold weather when cranking,. Normde, the 02 series did have both kill cable and decompression cable.

I am aware of that, but so far he has not determined by his posts whether he is using the fuel lever or the decomp lever. (What does the lever actually do?) On both, with lever in, runs normally, out, will not start.

This is where the stop cable connects. Just how it is hooked up inside I don't know. Pretty sure it just closes the rack when pulled.
