Agreed, he might have bought one for storage. I've sure thought about it.

The chains assisting support of the tailgate look way too light but look at the S-hook at the end of the chain! Those are so light you can bend them with pliers! Then the S-hook engages a hole punched in the sheetmetal. One bump and that's going to disengage.

Is that a wine cork 'securing' the wood block to the car's stinger?

I think he has a wood dowel linking the 4x4 to the stinger though it also appears the 4x4 is just supporting the tailgate which for some reason is holding up a gooseneck hitch.
