Depends on what you want.. My wife and I enjoy a slower pace, so we like Kauai (Garden Isle of Hawaii). The last two times, we have stayed just north of Lihue on the east shore at Islander on the Beach. We use Krellersgetaway (KrellersGetaway) and have been happy with accommodations and price, Brad either answers the phone when you call or gets right back to you.. By staying in the middle of the island, we can choose to go north (more rain) or south (less rain). We love to snorkel at the south shore (Poipu beach is our favorite). If you want more action, perhaps one of the other islands would be better. Kauai has lots of action, but some folks want more.

Couple of suggestions,
don't overpack, travel lite (they have laundromats nearby if needed)
rent snorkel gear by the week, if you need it more than 2 weeks, better to buy

Why not consider the US of A there are so many great places to see.
Ride a Steam train to the Grand Canyon.
Yellow Stone, wow!course
There is a narrow gauge steam train that goes through some of pretty's country in New Mexico.
Tombstone AZ. Bisbee AZ.
The list is almost endless.

I personally would never go on a cruse ship, too many people in too small a space.

The best airline I ever was on was TAP. ( Transportation Air Portugal ) Great food, No nonsense flying. 1 Turn after take off, climb 1/2 way across the Atlantic, down hill the other 1/2.
1 turn & land. When ask if I wanted wine & I said, they still gave me 2 bottles.

In Lisbon Ride a double deck city buss, ride allover town on the open top. Huge tile pictures on many buildings. Fun castles too see & tour.

Any way enjoy your vacation.

Funny you should mention that; I felt the same way for years. My impression was like being in a submarine, but that was before I finally relented and went on my first cruise. The rooms a much like a hotel, a bit smaller of course, but comfortable. We always get a room with a balcony now. There are lots of people on the ship, yes, but I have never felt confined or crowded. There are lots of things to do on the ship; the last cruise we went on the comedy club was outstanding. They have casinos, good food, swimming pools and other activities. I actually enjoy the days at sea; there's nothing so calming as sitting on the deck napping or just watching the water. The biggest surprise in my life was finding out the difference between what I thought a cruise would be like and what it really turned out to be.

I might add, we went with a group from out car club, and that was an added bonus. We didn't feel quite so isolated.

A cruise does not interest me but I might consider when I get older.......a friend sent this to me.

About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner.
At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters,
busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady.
I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back.
As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises".
She replied, "Yes, that's true. It's cheaper than a nursing home".
After talking with her, I decided there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship.
The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long-term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for:
1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day.
2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week).
3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.
4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.
5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.
6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days.
7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem! They will fix everything and apologize for the inconvenience.
8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.
9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip, you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship, they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.
Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go?
Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.
PS: And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side at NO EXTRA CHARGE!

Lots of people think a cruise ship would be too confining and too crowded. In fact, they are neither, there are a lot of people on the big ships, but they are never all in the same place at once, . I have been to most of the Caribbean ind Hawaiin islands, and they are much more crowded walking the streets and resort areas than a cruise ship. There is always something going on day and night, but if you want to relax and find a quiet spot to read a book, that is easy to do too.
My favorite cruise is the Panama Canal, it started in Mexico, visited Costa Rica, and through the canal out to the caribbeanislands. It felt like 2 cruises for one price, and if you like history, as I do, it was loaded with interesting speakers and visuals. If you decide on a cruise I recommend at least a 10 day trip as anything shorter feels like it's too darn short.
Also like the all inclusive so in the Caribbean and Mexico, especially if you just want to enjoy adult beverages and decompress poolside. If you just want to rent a house and explore the island, the Virgin Islands are fantastic, and if you do that, take a ferry to St John, it is our favorite place on this whole planet, just don't tell anyone about it, it's starting to get too popular the past decade.

Eddie, I didn't see you mention what you like to do or budget or any areas of the world you'd like to be.

I like cruises and my wife kinda likes them but at day 5 or so she's done.

If you want quiet, sun and cold ones and just relax and do nothing then am all inclusive in Cancun or something is great and relatively inexpensive.

Best cruise was Europe since I got the feel for different places and know where I want to go back and spend time. If I didn't dive I'd never do a Caribbean Cruise, I'd be bored and sick of people quick.

We have been on a couple of cruises and really enjoyed them. She wants to go on a cruise, so that's where I'm leaning. We've done quite a bit of the US, and will do more, but not during winter months. Us Southerners really shouldn't be driving around in the snow!!! :)

I've been pricing airfare to different areas. Seems like Asia is pretty cheap to get to in January, but Australia is twice as much. Ft Lauderdale is $200 each round trip. Might just go there and explore the everglades, but I'm not sure how warm it is then.
