So I brought my 2538 in to the dealer for a warranty fix (right rear tail light pod mounts were broke) and for them to perform the initial 50-hour service. Before I brought it to them I called and asked and they said 300-350 for the service. Today they called and talked to my wife and said it was ready and the total was $800!!! Going to pick it up tomorrow and will have a not too pleasant discussion with them.

What have y'all been paying or what is a reasonable cost for this service. **** I looked up the filters and everything for parts was around $200 so they must be charging 6 hours of labor. Seems more than a little excessive.

Maybe they will give you a reach-around when you pay the bill  I can spin the 50 hr service around in about an hour and 1/2. 2 tops. Filter prices sound about right. Did you figure on the fluids too? Dose sound mighty steep. :moneybag:

WHAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!?! 6 hours labor is too much man.

They must have hit you up on that light repair instead of warrantying it. At most there would be 2 hrs labor and that is if my wife were to do the work... :D I think 1-1.5 hrs would be enough. They told you $300 - $350. Just lay $350 on the counter and ask what the tax amount was, and then you're good to go. Good lesson for me to to get everything in writing up front. I have been burned so many times by unscrupulous people who bait and switch pricing.

Please keep us updated. I am about 15hrs behind you. I really hope they forgot to take off the warranty work charge...

Sorry Jabonee - was typing when you were. I in no way meant to imply that my wife was as good a mechanic as you... :p

My dealership quoted me $675 for the 50 hr. I did it myself and it came to about $225 in materials and parts and this with all Mahindra branded stuff. My dealership also gets $90 per hr. labor and charges $100 for pick up and delivery. It was just made sense for me to do it.
I also think that the dealer mech might not work on just "your" tractor. They charge for "drain" time but they are not under your tractor the whole time. They'll jump to another job but will charge you anyway. If they start your tractor say at 9 am and they finish your job at noon, they have charged you for all of those hours even though they did not work on just your tractor. They simply look at "start" time and "finish" time and strictly go by what the clock says and not actually what happened.

Is it possible they were quoting you for the "service" only, and then tacked on the filters and fluid, which hould have been marked way up. That would be 4 hours of service and then parts marked up 100%. Something's gotta give here. The suspense is killing me, so I better go do some work and get off the crack, er, I mean computer.

So I went to get it today. Their quote was for the labor for the job. Guess I wasn't explicit enough. They charged 3.5 hours of labor at $110/hr. Changed all the fluids and filters - engine lube oil and filter, hydraulic fluid and filter, both air filter elements, front differential lube. The parts prices didn't look to be excessively marked up, just a lot of them, and the 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid was $100 by itself. The tail light was warrantied though I suspect some of that labor was covered under the service. Total was $750.

Needless to say I'll be doing my own work going forward.

Thanks for the update LA Confederate. Sorry that was confusing. I wish they would have been more clear on the quote they gave you. My preference is dealing with folks who do not take advantage of the caveat emptor principle. I hope there is fresh grease on every zerk fitting too for that price! (Also also fresh blinker fluid...)

In all seriousness they sound like they did a very thorough job. I'll make a point to time myself when doing this for the first time and will report back. Were you able to secure the Mahindra part/item numbers for filters, etc... on your invoice? Please do share those when you get a chance. The front axle has a large capacity, so I can see some fluid costs there, but the labor in pulling drain plugs and filters, reinstalling them, and then pouring fluid in various holes surely can't take an able bodied man more than a couple hours? Maybe there is some complicated trick I am missing here...

Yes I did look and they did seem to grease everything on the machine. I'll check the invoice for part numbers however I did do some research and found most of the part numbers and their cross reference to WIX and Fleetguard (I was really bored at work one night). Once I compile everything I'll post it up. Crankcase fill was 5 quarts (1 gallon + 1 quart), 5 gallons of hydraulic oil, and I forgot how much for the front axle.

3 1/2 hours labor. Thats outrageous for a 50 hr service. That should not have been any more than 2. Dose your tractor have a MMM on it or BH ?
